Shadows of the Fort
Far away...across the globe....western United States. Another piece of the PFAS puzzle
The wildfire had erupted with a ferocity no one had anticipated. Flames devoured everything in their path, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky. Sergeant Alex Thompson, a seasoned soldier, received the urgent call while on leave. The local fire department was overwhelmed, and military assistance was desperately needed. Alex didn’t hesitate. He donned his gear and joined the emergency response team.
The scene that greeted him was apocalyptic. Entire swathes of forest were ablaze, and the air was thick with the acrid smell of burning wood and vegetation. Firefighters battled the inferno with every resource at their disposal, but the fire showed no sign of relenting. Alex and his team were tasked with deploying a special firefighting foam, known for its effectiveness in smothering flames.
For hours, Alex worked tirelessly, spraying the foam over the burning landscape. The foam, a chemical known as AFFF , formed a barrier that cut off the fire’s oxygen supply. As the flames subsided, Alex felt a surge of relief. They had managed to contain the fire, at least for now.
Days passed, and Alex returned to his normal duties. However, he soon noticed something was wrong. It started with a persistent cough that wouldn’t go away. Then came the headaches, a constant, throbbing pain that left him feeling disoriented. Fatigue set in, making even the simplest tasks feel like monumental challenges.
He felt he had to talk to someone. Maybe his sister, Sarah, working overseas.
