Shadow Protocol - Episode 18
The room was plunged into total darkness as Alex pulled the lever, cutting power to the mainframe and severing CipherSafe’s network from the Syndicate’s invasive protocol.?
For a moment, the only sound was their own breathing, the hum of the servers now silent. They had no idea if the shutdown had been enough to stop Ethan’s plan—or if the worst was still coming.
Seconds passed, each one stretched painfully long. Kai broke the silence, his voice barely a whisper in the darkness. “Did we… stop it?”
Alex took a shaky breath. “I don’t know. We’ve cut the Syndicate’s access, but if there was another failsafe, we wouldn’t know until it was too late.”
Tessa turned on a flashlight, her expression grim as the beam cut through the dim room.?
She scanned their surroundings, each shadow seeming to hold a threat. “Let’s get to the secondary power panel and run a diagnostic. If Ethan planted a backup protocol, we need to find it before it activates.”
They moved carefully through the dark hallways, the tension thick between them. Each step felt like a gamble, a delicate balance between relief and dread as they approached the panel.
Once there, Kai powered up a portable device to run diagnostics on the disconnected mainframe. The screen glowed faintly in the dark, casting a blue light over their faces.
After a few seconds, a message appeared: "Mainframe successfully disconnected. No current breaches detected."
A collective sigh of relief filled the room. They’d managed to stop the immediate threat, cutting Ethan’s protocol off before it could finalize the blackout.
But just as Alex felt a flicker of hope, their phone buzzed with a message from the anonymous contact: “The immediate threat is over, but don’t get comfortable. There’s more beneath the surface.”
Alex shared the message with Tessa and Kai, who exchanged a wary look. Tessa’s face tightened. “So this isn’t over. If our source is right, Ethan’s protocol might be one layer of something bigger.”
Kai frowned, processing the implications. “If there’s another layer, it’s hidden deep within our systems—so deep we can’t see it with a standard diagnostic.

Whatever Ethan was doing, it may be part of the Syndicate’s broader plan.”
Alex nodded slowly, feeling the weight of the message settle over them. “If we’ve only scratched the surface, there’s no telling what else the Syndicate might have planted. We may have cut off this attack, but for all we know, Ethan has already started something else.”
They worked in silence, each of them keenly aware of the ticking clock, even if no timer flashed on the screen anymore. The Syndicate wasn’t a one-man show—Ethan was just one player in a larger game.
If there was another attack on the horizon, they had to get ahead of it. But with Ethan gone, they were back in the dark.
Just then, Kai spoke up, his tone thoughtful. “If Ethan was only a part of this, he might’ve kept details somewhere only he could access. Maybe there’s a way we can follow his digital footprint—see if he left a trail leading to the Syndicate’s larger network.”
Tessa raised an eyebrow. “You mean tracing his access logs? It’s risky. If the Syndicate detects us tracking their activity, they could trigger another attack.”
“We don’t have a choice,” Alex replied, their voice resolute. “If we’re going to stop this, we need to understand exactly what we’re up against. We’ve been reacting to their moves. It’s time we got proactive.”
Kai nodded, determination in his eyes. “All right. I’ll start with Ethan’s encrypted files, see if I can find any links he used to communicate with the Syndicate.”
They returned to the control room and powered up a backup system, bringing the screens to life in a quiet hum. Kai dove into Ethan’s access history, his fingers flying across the keyboard as he decrypted layers of files.
Minutes later, Kai let out a low whistle. “I found something—a secure channel Ethan was using to communicate with an unknown external server. But here’s the kicker: the connection’s still live.”
Alex and Tessa exchanged a look. A live connection meant that the Syndicate might still be waiting for updates—or maybe even monitoring their activity.
