As former PM and BJP stalwart Atal Bihari Vajpayee once said, 'The ultimate decision-making authority rests with the people.' Tomorrow, November 20th, Maharashtra's voters will exercise this authority as they head to the polls to form a new government. However, allegations of bribery and influence surrounding Vinod Tawde, the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) national general secretary, have raised concerns about the integrity of the electoral process. The controversy has sparked outrage, particularly after Tawde was accused of distributing cash to influence voters in Palghar, near state capital Mumbai. This incident undermines the very principles of democracy, highlighting the need for transparency and accountability in India's electoral system.
This incident is not an isolated one, as several similar cases have been uncovered in the last few days, eroding trust and damaging the fabric of society. The allegations compromise key democratic values, including:
1.?Equality: Corruption allegations create uneven playing fields for candidates, undermining fair competition.
2.?Freedom: Voters' choices are influenced by money and muscle power, rather than genuine representation.
3.?Justice: The legal system is compromised when the powerful evade accountability.

The Election Commission of India has implemented measures to ensure a fair electoral process, including the Model Code of Conduct, Expenditure Observers, and Voter Verification. Despite these efforts, recurring instances of cash distribution to voters undermine the electoral process, casting a shadow on the Commission's effectiveness and intentions.
To combat this, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs has issued a Standard Operating Procedure to check the use of freebies to lure voters . The GST and Customs officials will also set up flying squads and static surveillance teams for effective road and transit checks.
In a democracy, citizens must understand their interests, know relevant facts, and critically evaluate political arguments to participate meaningfully. Education plays a vital role in fostering this critical thinking, enabling citizens to make informed decisions and hold leaders accountable. As Mahatma Gandhi once said, "Democracy is not merely a form of government, it is a way of life." Let's uphold this principle and ensure a fair electoral process for all.
