Shabbat Shalom from Rabbi Bradley Solmsen
Park Avenue Synagogue
Park Avenue Synagogue seeks to inspire, educate, and support our membership towards living passion-filled Jewish lives.
In this week’s #Torah portion, P’kudei, we read in minute detail about the instructions for building and decorating the Tabernacle as well as the vestments (ritual wear) worn by the officiants. The exacting descriptions and the concern for the aesthetic are breathtaking. Here is just one example:
They hammered out sheets of gold and cut threads to be worked into designs among the blue, the purple, the crimson yarns, and the fine linen. (#Exodus 39:3)
The portion reminds me of the Jewish value known as hiddur #mitzvah – translated as the beautification of mitzvot. It is the principle of enhancing a mitzvah?through aesthetics.
Our people have long recognized that paying attention to the details, making our ritual objects beautiful, has an impact on our actions in a positive way and even helps to strengthen our community.
As a teacher and a parent, I know how important it is to make sure our young people know that details matter. I love sharing with them the beautiful, often hand-made, ritual objects in our synagogue and in our homes. It strengthens their connections to #Judaism, the #Jewish people, the #synagogue, and to the rituals themselves.
One of the values we are reminded of in this week’s reading is that when our children are creating things, it is so important to give them the space, time, and resources to ensure what they are creating is beautiful – that their creations reflect care, passion, and, most importantly, the love that is in their hearts and souls. This will ensure a deep connection to the most important things in our lives.
#Shabbat Shalom.
