Secure Horizons: Navigating Digital Transformation Safely

In a recent panel session on "Building a Resilient Digital Transformation Journey for SMEs " organised by SGTech with Acronis, experts delved into the best practices and practical strategies for seamlessly integrating security into the digital transformation process.

Dr Aleks Farseev, ExCo Member of SGTech shared his insights on the cybersecurity challenges SMEs face at the panel discussion, joined by Dennis Chung of Microsoft, Conrad Chan of M1 Limited, Kevin Reed of Acronis, Andy Choi of IMDA and moderated by Tommy Foo from Acronis.

Many SMEs remain unaware of the severe dangers of cybersecurity breaches. Even with sufficient knowledge, they still lack the expertise needed to make relevant yet cost-friendly security decisions. Aleks Farseev says “the formal definitions of SME are, ‘company with less than 200 employees’, and ‘below $100 million turnover’” and ”security concerns of companies with 2 or 199 employees are likely to be drastically different.” This affects the extent of cybersecurity implemented to protect companies.

Sovereign AI: Taking Singapore’s National AI Strategy to the Next Level

Since the emergence of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), technology has reshaped industries and transformed our workforce, as individuals across various sectors begin to utilise AI in their businesses. Looking ahead, countries are beginning to build their intelligence, data and digital infrastructures. This is where sovereign AI takes the stage.

Sovereign AI encompasses both physical and data infrastructures. It involves cultivating sovereign foundation models, such as large language models, which are developed by locals and trained on local datasets to ensure inclusivity with regard to specific dialects, cultures, and practices that are unique to each society. This is important in preserving a nation’s identity through data and developing a more comprehensive technological infrastructure beyond the basic foundations of technology.

Singapore is engaging in various sovereign AI initiatives, such as partnering with NVIDIA to enhance its National Super Computer Center (NSCC) through the integration of NVIDIA H100 GPUs. On top of that, local telecommunications company, Singtel is working on energy-efficient AI factories across Southeast Asia, powered by NVIDIA Hopper architecture GPUs and NVIDIA AI reference architectures.

Fair to Flex: New Flexi-Work Guidelines

From December 2024, all employees can ask for flexi-work arrangements. The new flexi-work guidelines, while not enforceable by law, stipulate that all firms set up a process for their employees to submit a formal request for flexible work arrangements, and also outline how requests will be handled.

SGTech believes that the new guidelines will encourage inclusion and will aim to address Singapore's tight labour market and ageing workforce, facilitating the continued employment of caregivers and seniors who wish to remain in the workforce. This is a major step towards building a fair and productive workforce where employees can balance work and caregiving commitments.
