SFI COMMUNITY GRANTS RFP PROCESS
2023 SFI Community Grants RFP Now Open!?
Apply by Friday, March 17, 2023 (11:59 pm ET)
The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) is interested in collaborating with local partners on community-based projects and activities that support SFI’s mission to advance sustainability through forest-focused collaborations.??
SFI opened its annual request for proposals (RFP) supporting community-focused grant projects today. Applications will be accepted from eligible entities until 11:59 pm eastern time on March 17, 2023.
?SFI Community Grant Funds are available to support grant projects that promote collaboration with the SFI Network and support local communities’ understanding of the value and benefits of sustainably managed forests.?
Successful grant projects will address one or more of the following priorities:
? Coordinate with SFI Implementation Committees (SIC) to support SFI 2022 standard requirements related to Climate Smart Forestry, Fire Resilience and Awareness, Conservation of Biological Diversity, and Recognition and Respect Indigenous Rights, with a focus on training and best practices that can be replicated.?
? Encourage Indigenous community uptake of the SFI Small-Scale Forest Management Module for Indigenous Peoples and Families through tool kits, administration support, training, and other methods.?
? Support diverse community uptake of the new SFI Urban and Community Forest Sustainability Standard to further equitable access to health and climate benefits (with particular support for municipalities, universities, and other entities preparing for certification audits or seeking progress on standard objectives) and document best management practices and pilot projects that advance urban forest sustainability.?
? Collaborate with SIC and Project Learning Tree (PLT) partners to implement and distribute environmental education, forest literacy, and green career resources and tools (ex, the Forest Literacy Framework, Journeys of Black Professionals in Green Careers, and PLT Activity Collections, such as Nature of Fire) and SFI standards.?
? Grow demand for SFI certification and certified products in the architecture, engineering, and construction community by sharing the environmental and social benefits of building with SFI-certified forest products.?
For all SFI collaborative funding opportunities, a grant project proposal is strengthened by directly benefitting an underserved community in the United States and Canada, including projects created for and by Indigenous, Black, Francophone, Latino/a, and urban communities. Project proposals are not required to serve these communities, but those that do are preferred and greatly encouraged.
Partnership requirements
All projects must be submitted by an SFI Implementation Committee (SIC) or non-profit organization. If the proposal is submitted by a non-profit organization, the project must include an SFI Implementation Committee or SFI-certified organization as an active project partner.?
Duration and funding levels
Applications that feature creative partnerships and/or high degrees of leverage are preferred. Projects are typically completed within a year of SFI fund distribution, but may be allowed for up to a two-year timeframe. SFI Community Grant funding will be offered in the range of $5,000-$20,000 per project.
