Sexual misconduct in the NHS

Sexual misconduct in the NHS

The Academy Resident Doctors' Committee fully supports NHS England’s commitment to addressing sexual misconduct, including implementing an anonymous reporting system. We believe this initiative marks a positive and essential step toward creating a safer, more respectful environment within the NHS.

A profound cultural shift is urgently needed within the NHS to confront and eliminate poor behaviour, and anonymous reporting offers a vital mechanism to begin this transformation. By empowering staff to report misconduct without fear of retribution, we take a critical first step toward fostering a safer, more supportive workplace.

However, addressing sexual misconduct is only the beginning; this initiative should mark the start of a larger effort to systematically confront and eradicate all forms of unacceptable behaviour in the NHS. Addressing the root causes of such behaviours will help ensure that harmful conduct, especially its most extreme forms, is not allowed to develop.

A thriving NHS depends on a culture where all staff feel valued, supported, and safe. We are confident that, by addressing these issues directly, the NHS will not only enhance its ability to deliver exceptional patient care but also foster an environment that reflects its commitment to the well-being of its workforce.

As we move forward, our committee is committed to supporting this journey of change. By working together to implement these recommendations, we can build a future where every NHS team member feels secure, respected, and empowered to contribute to a culture of excellence and compassion for our patients.
