SEWcialize in Haiti: Day 1
First Day of Sewing School
For many of us, we have forgotten that first day of school.
In Haiti, it’s all smiles as Teaching Team and Students begin the two week Beginner sewing lessons.
The room consists of:
16 ‘amazing’ Students (15 ladies & 1 gentleman)
2 local Translators, Rosamyta & Miriam (English / Creole)
2 Teacher Assistants: Colleen (Canada) & Carol (USA). Both are Volunteers at Haiti Arise, pitching into the Sewing program.
3 Sewing Seeds team: Sylvia (founder, Lead teacher), Jean (Master teacher), Angela (project organizer)
Already, the students are amazed at how much they are learning … on the first day!
The biggest giggles and gleeful screams were heard when they discovered the new sewing machines were ‘self threading’!!
Never had any students seen such a feature before!! This will certainly be the hot topic at their dinner table tonight!
Past experience tells us that Classes are very solemn and somber for the first few days, but check out all these smiles!!
Everyone is getting to know each other, and that is tough when there are two languages involved. Another learning curve.
Translators can ‘make or break’ the lessons. If Teachers can not convey the sewing terms, tips, and methods … all can be lost quickly.
Rosamyta & Miriam are doing a great job. Neither has been a sewer, so Terms are new, but they are so enthused, they may take classes in the future.
The Sewing Seeds objective is to "Teach Teachers”, through a sewing curriculum of Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced techniques and methods.
Haiti arise has provided Sewing Seeds with 16 Students, with experience and passion.
Some of these students will Graduate and become Teachers for future classes at Haiti Arise, or throughout Haiti.
Some will utilize their skills at home, sewing an endless list of Family essentials.
Some Graduates will go on to find employment at local shops, factories, or similar opportunities.
Finally, a few Graduates will become entrepreneurs and start their own enterprise, employing others.
