SEW much being learned in Haiti!
"VERY BEAUTIFUL PROJECT" (English)
“VREMAN BEL PROJET” (Creole) …. Sounds far more SEWphisticated and classy!
What would School be without a test?? Sylvia too, dropped the Pop Quiz on “Important phrases” that have been repeated each day.
The students were nervous ... ready set go ... 15 minutes to list as many Phrases as they could remember, of the 12. The Teachers were pleasantly surprised with very goods results ... numerous got 12/12, the majority 8-10 of 12. Thumbs up ??
Students that had finished their daily projects, were taught basic pattern instructions with 'tracing out', and discussion on 'best layout' for fabric consumption.
In May (Intermediate Class), topics such as “Costing” of a Sewn Item will be covered. Sewing Seeds over the years has found this to be the most valuable tool, as many times, Entrepreneurs do not consider ‘Labor’ as part of the costing.
The project of the day, was to make a purse. It was a definite hit, as the conversation got wound up, and visions of making 100’s, and selling selling them at the Market took over! Students all around the world are always astounded what ‘they’ have created in these Sewing Classes. Sewing Seeds encourages Students to dream about being Teachers, or Entrepreneurs and creating their own products through the skill of Sewing.
Planning of the graduation on Tuesday, also became a lively discussion as to a fashion show Students want! Plan’s include each student will wear something they made, fancy hair and word has it maybe some dancing!! Students have ordered Cake for 100 family and friends attending the event! Definitely an event to stay tuned for!
As the 2 week Class draws to a close, Sewing Seeds Team (Sylvia, Jean, and Angela) would like to thank Volunteers Colleen (Ont. Canada) and Carol (OR. USA) for their assistance. It has been invaluable. Both Colleen and Carol ’just happened’ to be Volunteering at Haiti Arise and spent much of their time with the Sewing Program. Their enthusiasm has grown to the point where they would like to return to assist in the ‘Intermediate’ classes to be held in May 2018. They will be raising funds to cover their Airfare and Housing for the 2 week trip. Please let us know if you could help in this endeavor!!
Also, translators Rosamyta & Miriam have been a huge asset to the Beginner program, and we hope to see you in May!! Maybe translate for our videographer, Rick Castiglione!!
Check out: https://vimeo.com/142436843 a 10 min video of Mexico project 2015, now Graduating 75+ students a year. They ’Teach’ new Students in the morning, and Graduates manufacture Hotel Uniforms in the afternoon! Demand on their production continues to grow. They need more Students!! Great ’self sustaining' project.
