Seven Words to Always Use (When Giving Someone Your Business Card)

It’s 2022, and business cards still matter. In this digitized age, who would have known? I had fun reading?an article about the origination of the business card–or “introduction card”, which may have come from 15th century China.

Paleontologists tell us that cavemen used business rocks. (I just made that up.)

Business Card Basics

OK, here’s a few things I’ve learned about business cards, and then I’ll give you seven words you need to commit to memory. You know the basics:

  1. Yes,?you need a business card. By putting something tangible in someone else’s hands you at least gain the possibility that they’ll take notice again at the end of the day. It could end up in their data base, or in a drawer, or in the trash.
  2. Go with decent card stock, color, and clarity. It’s funny, but I’ve regularly heard people remark when I’ve had solid card stock, “Oh, that’s a solid card.”
  3. If you don’t have a natural eye for these things,?get input from others.
  4. Always have some readily accessible. (For me, they’re in my front pocket.)

Seven Words to Always Use

And now, the seven words, which I learned from an amazing networker who really, really cared about others.

“If you ever need me, call me.” Say that every time you hand someone your card–whether for business or personal reasons. “If you ever need me, call me.”?Simple words, easy to memorize, and they mean so much. By doing that, you’re conveying what you really want to convey: that you’re for the other person. There are times when I’ve said to someone, “I’m going to say seven words to leave you with, and?I’m also going to write them on my card, because I want you to hear loud and clearly that I’m for you.” And then I write them.

These seven words have led to follow-up conversations and actions which have benefited both the receiver and the giver. The bottom line is I’m willing to leave the results with God. I hope they’re helpful to you. “If you ever need me, call me.” Oh, and?if you ever need me, call me.

Wonderful. I was just thinking I'm not going to get business cards and just text people my contact. Why not both?

Tom, the seven words will stick in my mind and on the back of my card for ever now. Thanks.
