As the world is changing and tending towards truly human, so also work is changing: what employees are looking for at work is changing. Employers must change to accommodate the changes the change that is happening with employees. Employees want work to be fun, exciting and fulfilling. Its no longer about what they make but how they are made to feel.
These are the seven trends that are transforming the way employees view work.
1. Employees care more about who they become than what they earn: Employees want a workplace that will focus on helping them grow. They want to work in a growth environment where they are challenged to grow and become their best self and make their best contribution. They know that when they leave an organization, they leave behind the salary but go with who they have become. No one can take from them the mindset and capability they have developed. Employees want to work with organizations that has a growth culture
2. Employees want to have a share of the value they create: Employees don’t want to be used for another person’s success. They want to have a stake in the outcome. They want to be value creators
3. Employees want to feel they matter and what they do has meaning: Employees want to do work that matters, which gives them meaning. They want to be part of something that is bigger than life itself. They want to make a difference and be significant. Any organization that won’t be able to provide them with this will not have the best employee. They want the 40 hours they spend at work to help them achieve their purpose and bring meaning to their lives. They don’t want to live one life at work and another at home. They want it all integrated into one.
4. Employees want more freedom not job security
5. Employees want to be treated as human not another factor of production: They want to be treated as humans and not numbers or another factor of production like money, resources. Organizations that treat people as a factor of production will lose out. Employees are humans and are people’s spouses and parents. The way they are treated in the workplace will impact how they treat everyone in their lives. They want to leave work each day feeling safe, happy and fulfilled and take that home. Humans have feelings and how you treat them impact how they feel about themselves and how they make other people feel. They want the organizations they work for create an environment that is pro-human. They don’t want to be seen as their job description of the title or position they occupy but as humans who have aspiration and vision for a better future.

6. Employees want to work in a place where they are inspired not motivated: Employees feel that motivation is more like manipulation for them to do what they don’t want to do. When they are motivated, they end up experiencing stress and burnout. They want to be inspired not motivated. Motivation is external while inspiration is internal. They want to do things because they are inspired not because someone wants to use them to achieve his or her success.?They want to be inspired to dream more, become more, do more and make more contributions. Motivation doesn’t last more than a day but inspiration can last for a lifetime. Inspiration is the best way to stir up our humanity. When we are alive, we can do amazing things that we never imagine we can do. Inspiration unleashes our potential and ingenuity.
7. Employees want to be led and coached not managed: Employees are not resources to be managed. You cannot manage innovation, creativity and how people unleash their potential. You cannot manage potential. Humans are not resources. You cannot manage people to perform at their best, you can only coach them. Employees want to work in places where they will be coached to become better and perform at a higher level. Organizations that are management-oriented and management-led will not make much. They will leave a lot of potential on the table. Leaders don’t have followers they develop other leaders. Organizations that are leadership-oriented
As the workplace changes, organizations will also have to change the way they see work. Organizations will become more humanize. Many companies will be willing to adapt to best serve their employees.
