Seven reasons to believe that Humanity will survive Artificial Intelligence

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) has led to transformative changes in various aspects of our lives. From self-driving cars to virtual assistants, AI has made remarkable strides. However, while AI possesses remarkable computational abilities, it falls short when compared to the innate capabilities of the human race in creating a truly wonderful world. In this post, let’s explore why human abilities will always surpass AI when it comes to crafting a better world.

1.?????? Emotional Intelligence

One of the most significant areas where humans excel is emotional intelligence. Humans can empathize, understand, and respond to the emotions of others. This emotional connection is crucial in creating a wonderful world because it fosters genuine relationships, compassion, and solidarity. AI lacks the capability to truly understand and empathize with human emotions, which makes it challenging for it to create a world filled with empathy and emotional depth.

2.?????? Creativity and Innovation

Human creativity is boundless. We have the ability to dream, imagine, and create art, literature, music, and countless other forms of expression. While AI can generate art and music, it does so based on patterns and algorithms, lacking the depth of human creativity. Humans possess the unique ability to push boundaries, challenge norms, and innovate in ways that AI cannot replicate. This innovation is essential for creating a wonderful world full of fresh ideas and breakthroughs.

3.?????? Ethical Decision-Making

Ethics and morality are central to shaping a better world. Humans have a deep understanding of ethics and the ability to make complex moral decisions. This ethical compass guides us in making choices that contribute to the greater good and the well-being of our planet. AI, on the other hand, operates on algorithms and lacks the moral judgment and ethical considerations that humans inherently possess. Creating a wonderful world requires making ethical decisions that are beyond the scope of AI.

4.?????? Adaptability and Flexibility

Humans possess the remarkable ability to adapt and evolve in response to changing circumstances. This adaptability has enabled us to thrive in diverse environments and overcome challenges throughout history. AI, while proficient at performing specific tasks, lacks the flexibility and adaptability that humans have. In a constantly changing world, the ability to adapt is crucial to creating a wonderful world that can address evolving challenges effectively.

5.?????? Love, Empathy, and Compassion

Love, empathy, and compassion are fundamental to creating a wonderful world. These emotions drive acts of kindness, charity, and support for those in need. While AI can simulate responses that mimic these emotions, it cannot genuinely experience them. Humans have an innate capacity for love and empathy that leads to genuine connections and a sense of community. These qualities are essential for fostering a better world.

6.?????? We Suffer

Suffering is an innate part of the human condition.? Through suffering, humanity grows, evolves, and changes.? This, in turn, creates more suffering.? Suffering moves us off our current state compelling us to pursue better states of happiness and all that is noted above. We lose. And when we lose, it is tragic as there is an absence of something. When someone dies, we lose their potential. Their hopes, dreams, and all the good that could have been done. AI is like a light bulb. It's on, or off. When off or broken, it is doing exactly what it was made to do. If AI were to die, it is no different than a light bulb breaking and being replaced with an exact replica. AI doesn't fear. AI has nothing to lose. Humanity faces fear each and every day and that drives our ability to live uniquely. That uniqueness allows us to grow and innovate and create a different world; including a world that uses AI for humanities benefits.

7.?????? Faith and Freedom

Faith in a higher power provides unique advantages for humanity over AI.? Faith generates hope and joy in the face of suffering.? Faith provides ethical guidance that drives people in making decisions in the context of a functioning community.? It provides emotional support and comfort and is crucial to understanding the power of forgiveness and compassion for others.? Faith provides meaning and a sense of purpose that is greater than an individual’s drive for personal gain, sometimes at the expense of others. Faith is an expression of freedom and the choices we make in everything we do. Whether it be choosing to be a Vikings fan, enjoying an ice-cold Fresca, or enjoying nice long walks in the woods, our ability to believe and choose is the ultimate measure of freedom.

Final thoughts...for now

In this burgeoning age of artificial intelligence, it's important to acknowledge the remarkable advancements and contributions of AI to society. However, when it comes to creating a truly wonderful world, human abilities, such as faith, emotional intelligence, creativity, ethical decision-making, adaptability, and love, empathy, compassion, suffering, faith and freedom remain unmatched. AI can complement and enhance human capabilities, but it cannot replace the essence of what makes us uniquely capable of crafting a world filled with wonder, beauty, and genuine human connection. Ultimately, the partnership between humans and AI should harness the strengths of both to create a brighter future for all.

Thanks, Jeff, for this thoughtful piece. I agree in principal with all that you said, and I hope that humanity is on balance enhanced rather than harmed by AI. But so far the results are mixed. One of my biggest concerns is that AI learns and produces its output based on what it absorbs, and prioritizes based on frequency. The result is often reinforcement of stereotypes, an absence of diversity in text and images, and the amplification of false narratives. AI is also a great violator of copywrites and intellectual property, though that's largely driven by humans who choose to "teach" AI using copywrited material, which disproves the idea that humans will behave ethically in developing AI (see: https://apnews.com/article/openai-lawsuit-authors-grisham-george-rr-martin-37f9073ab67ab25b7e6b2975b2a63bfe). The use of AI was/is a key part of the strikes by both the Writers Guild (resolved) and SAG-AFTRA (still ongoing but the resolution of the former will likely lead to the resolution of the later).

Excellent overview article on AI and the concept that it can never truly replace that which makes us uniquely human. Now if we could just convince the many humans in our world that all of those qualities can actually apply to THEM. I’ve seen firsthand in clinical practice that many clients have no idea what their emotional capabilities truly entail. When they are able to learn about emotions and become more aware of and apply emotions properly, I see changes lives. Well done ????
