Seven Questions to Ask Before Changing Job
When people consider about changing their job because they are not happy having hard time at their current work, most of them tend to think about how they should negotiate for better salary, what position they should apply for, and whether they can enjoy holidays at weekends. In fact, there are many more important things to be considered. Among them, I have chosen the most essential (7) questions you should ask yourself before you decide to change to a new job.
(1) Why do I want to change my job?
Once you start thinking about changing job, you should ask yourself “What makes you think about changing your job? Why do I want to change a new job?" Maybe you want to change a new job because you’ve had hard days for a long time. But it can also be your temporary decision due to your temporary emotions when you just had a hard day at work.
(2) What kind of job do I want?
Changing from one job to another is always aimed for the good. So, you should know clearly about what kind of job you want. If you don’t, you’ll have difficult times finding the next job and consequently, you’ll fail to get the kind of career life you really want and also face similar conditions from your previous job.
(3) What kind of working environment do I like?
For many people, working environment is an important aspect of successful and healthy career life. A good working environment can make you feel happy and in contrast, it can also make you feel sad. Are you the type of person who likes to work individually or someone who likes teamwork? Only then you can choose your favorite working environment.
(4) Could there be any new challenges and opportunities?
This is one of the essential questions you should ask yourself. When changing a career, most people give their reason that they want to change because they did not have exciting challenges at the previous work. However, you need to know exactly to what extent you want for these challenges. Otherwise, you may end up carrying the burden you can’t handle.
(5) What kind of boss do I want to work with?
Choosing your boss is also an important thing you should not miss to question. For most of the time, you cannot choose your boss while you’re working, but you can choose when you change to a new job. Knowing the kind of boss you want to work with is much helpful for you to judge and choose your boss during the interview.
(6) What kind of benefits and rewards do I want?
What is more important than just thinking about salary is to think about other benefits and rewards to be enjoyed. Different people have different needs and wants and you should know what your needs are. So, what are your needs? What benefits can I enjoy in my new job? Can my new job give me the benefits I need?
(7) What do I expect from the new job?
Lastly but most importantly, what do I basically expect from the new job? Do I expect for learning or do I expect for challenges, benefits or just a different job? Knowing your expectations from the new job can make you achieve your expectations more easily.
So, if you’ve ever thought of changing your career, don’t forget to ask these 7 questions to yourself so that you can get a better job.

4 年Great sharing, Ama. Thank you so much. Personally, I think breaking into a new career rather than switching companies has a lot to do and strategize especially for young people out there with less experiences. It would be great to hear from you on how young employees with transferable skills can stand out in the market in order to change their career.
