Seven Luxurious Bathroom Renovations
Your bathroom doesn’t have to be purely for the sake of getting clean…it can provide you with a luxurious experience that will kick your day off to an invigorating start and finish it on a relaxing note. For those looking to invest in an upgrade to your humble commode, here’s a few ideas to get you started, ranging from a full remodel to the addition of a few accessories.
Dual shower head
This one is geared a bit more toward couples, but it can still add to the experience for just one person. Another head can be installed across from the original, overhead, or both! There are even shower heads that supply a stream from the wall. It may go without saying, but a professional will be needed to route in the plumbing for the new head.
Re-tile
One piece shower/bathtubs are easier to clean, but they can err on the bland side. Your choice depends on the aesthetic you are trying to achieve and the price point you are trying to achieve it at…Fair warning, this next part can be a bit boring.
Your design options can be divided into a couple categories: tile composition, shape, and color. Tile composition can vary from granite, marble, porcelain, ceramic, glass, and even polished concrete or river rock. If you like the look of a blank wall similar to regular interior walls, plaster is an option as well. The shape of the tiles contributes to the minimalist/maximalist aspect of the design. A smaller cut tile such as a honeycomb, a mosaic, or subway tile lay will add detail for a maximalist appeal, whereas something like a full panel of rock will look minimalist while still adding to the luxury. Tile color will largely depend on its composition, but each material has a color palette of its own, and you can choose if you would only like tiles of a certain shade, or a natural variety of shades within the spectrum that particular tiling material offers.
Overhead skylight
Natural light is well-known for its ability to improve a space. I find that it lifts my mood instantly and boosts my productivity, and I tend to gravitate towards spaces that feel airy, light, and sunny. To capture that mood in a morning shower would be many people’s ideal start to the day. Windows are avoided in bathrooms for obvious privacy reasons, but a skylight allows even more natural light and retains privacy. Unfortunately, this is restricted to bathrooms that would be structurally compatible with the renovation. Once again a professional is required.
Vertical garden
When it comes to house plants, the bathroom may be the last place you would think to put your greenery. However, to go along with the theme of airy, light, and sunny…plants can have the same effect as the aforementioned natural light. You can add hanging plants inside the shower area, free-standing centerpiece plants in the main bathroom, or even design a wall to accommodate a vertical garden! Make sure to use plants that love steam and warm moisture, like spider plants, pothos, and most ferns.
Benches
These can be tiled into a corner or wall, a fold out wooden bench, or even a free-standing wooden slatted unit that can be placed in a shower or next to a bathtub as a towel rest. Regardless, they add the option to relax, linger and enjoy the experience.
Sound system
Maybe it sounds appealing to overlay your shower with a soundtrack of rain, crashing waves, thunder, and tropical birds...or maybe you like to psych yourself up for the day with some hard rock. Whatever your preference, adding an auditory component to your experience is just another sense checked off the list that lends to a heightened shower experience.
Heated tile
I had to finish with this one. There’s nothing worse than venturing from a delicious nest of fuzzy blankets on a cold winter’s day and having to plant a foot on freezing cold tile. The cost and invasive-ness of this installation may be shocking, but the luxury is unmatched.??
