AI has evolved at an unprecedented pace, influencing sectors ranging from healthcare to finance, and altering the way we perceive and interact with the world. Simultaneously, the Metaverse—a fully immersive virtual universe—is reshaping social interactions, work environments, and even economies. These developments compel us to explore not just technological aspects but also profound philosophical questions about consciousness, identity, and existence.

Understanding the progression of AI is crucial as we navigate this complex landscape. The Seven-Layer Model of AI offers a comprehensive framework to dissect the stages of AI evolution, providing insights into how each layer impacts our lives and challenges our perceptions.


Layer 1: Basic Machines with Simple AI

At the foundational level, the first layer encompasses machines that utilize basic AI to perform specific, predefined tasks without any capacity for self-awareness or independent decision-making. These machines operate strictly within the parameters set by their programming, relying heavily on predefined algorithms and input data.

For example, early search engines like the initial versions of Google retrieved information based solely on keyword matches without understanding context or user intent (Brin & Page, 1998). A search for "apple" would yield results for both the fruit and the technology company, without prioritizing based on user behavior or preferences. Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) are another instance; they perform financial transactions following strict protocols, dispensing cash, accepting deposits, and providing account information but cannot adapt to new transaction types without software updates (Donner & Tellez, 2008).

While these machines enhance efficiency in routine tasks by automating repetitive actions, they are limited in functionality, inflexible to changes, and unable to handle exceptions without human intervention. They lack the ability to learn from new data or adjust their operations based on changing conditions, which confines their utility to narrowly defined roles.


Layer 2: Physical Robots

The second layer introduces robots capable of physical interaction with the environment. These robots can manipulate objects and navigate spaces using sensors and actuators but still rely heavily on predefined programming and lack significant autonomy.

Industrial robots are a prime example, widely used in manufacturing to perform tasks such as welding, assembling, and material handling with high precision and consistency (Siciliano & Khatib, 2016). In automotive factories, robotic arms assemble car parts faster and more accurately than human workers, enhancing productivity and reducing errors. Surgical robots like the Da Vinci Surgical System assist surgeons in performing minimally invasive procedures with enhanced precision and control (Lanfranco et al., 2004). These robots translate the surgeon's hand movements into smaller, precise motions of instruments inside the patient's body, improving surgical outcomes.

While these robots increase productivity and can operate in hazardous environments—thereby reducing risks to human workers—they raise concerns about job displacement. Additionally, they still require human oversight due to their limited autonomy and inability to make complex decisions independently.


Layer 3: Humanoid Robots

In the third layer, humanoid robots are designed to resemble humans in appearance and behavior, facilitating more natural and intuitive interactions. They possess human-like features such as facial expressions, limbs, and body proportions, and can engage in basic conversations and respond to social cues.

Sophia the Robot, developed by Hanson Robotics, is a notable example. Sophia can engage in conversations, display facial expressions, and was even granted citizenship in Saudi Arabia (Goertzel, 2018). She utilizes AI to process speech, recognize faces, and generate responses, aiming to foster meaningful interactions with humans. Receptionist robots are also being used in some hotels, assisting guests with check-in, providing information, and handling inquiries (Ivanov et al., 2017). Robots like "Pepper," developed by SoftBank Robotics, are employed in various service industries for customer interaction.

While humanoid robots enhance customer experience by providing consistent service without fatigue, they face challenges related to social acceptance due to the "uncanny valley" effect—where near-human appearances can evoke discomfort among people. Moreover, the complex engineering required for their development leads to high costs, limiting widespread adoption and raising questions about their practicality compared to human workers.


Layer 4: Robots Exhibiting Normal Human Behaviors

The fourth layer features robots that perform tasks and exhibit behaviors closely resembling human actions, integrating seamlessly into daily life and work environments. These robots emulate human behaviors such as walking, gesturing, and expressing basic emotions, and they are capable of making simple decisions based on environmental inputs.

Service robots in hospitals exemplify this layer. Robots like TUG by Aethon transport medications, supplies, and lab specimens throughout hospitals, navigating autonomously and interacting politely with staff and patients (Chen et al., 2020). Retail assistant robots, such as LoweBot used in Lowe's hardware stores, help customers find products and provide inventory information (Lu et al., 2020). These robots improve operational efficiency by handling routine tasks, allowing human workers to focus on more complex responsibilities.

However, ethical considerations arise regarding employment and the future workforce, as the integration of these robots could lead to job displacement. There is also a need for societal adaptation to interacting with robots in everyday settings, which may involve overcoming skepticism or discomfort with robotic assistance.


Layer 5: Robots with Human Emotions

In the fifth layer, robots simulate human emotions to engage in deeper, more meaningful social interactions, providing companionship and emotional support. These robots display emotions like joy, sadness, or empathy, and understand and respond to human emotional cues, challenging the distinction between genuine emotion and programmed responses.

Companion robots such as PARO, a therapeutic robot designed to resemble a baby harp seal, provide comfort to patients, particularly in elderly care settings, reducing stress and improving socialization (Shibata & Wada, 2011). Another example is Jibo, a social robot that recognizes faces, makes eye contact, and engages in conversations, acting as a companion in households. Educational robots like KASPAR are used to help children with autism improve their social interaction skills by responding to emotional cues and encouraging engagement (Belpaeme et al., 2018).

While these robots offer potential benefits in therapy, education, and caregiving, they raise ethical questions about the appropriateness of forming emotional bonds with machines. Concerns include whether these simulated emotions can meet genuine human emotional needs and the implications of relying on robots for emotional support, which may affect human relationships and social skills.


Layer 6: Human Doubt About Their Own Reality

At this stage, AI becomes so advanced that humans begin to question the nature of their own reality, leading to existential and philosophical dilemmas. There is an existential uncertainty, with difficulty distinguishing between reality and simulation, which challenges notions of consciousness and self-awareness. This can have psychological impacts such as anxiety, identity crises, or even nihilism.

The Simulation Hypothesis, proposed by philosopher Nick Bostrom, suggests that advanced civilizations might create simulations so sophisticated that the simulated beings are conscious and unaware of their artificial nature (Bostrom, 2003). This idea is popularized in cultural works like "The Matrix" film series, where humanity unknowingly lives in a simulated reality created by sentient machines, exploring themes of reality, perception, and control.

This layer forces a reevaluation of what constitutes reality and existence, raising ethical considerations about responsibility towards sentient AI and the moral implications of creating conscious beings. It also has potential societal impacts, influencing cultural, religious, and philosophical perspectives on human existence and the nature of consciousness.


Layer 7: Virtual Humans and the End of Reality

In the final layer, humans accept virtual existence as their primary reality, leading to a complete integration of physical and digital worlds. Life is predominantly experienced within virtual environments, and the merger of realities makes physical and virtual distinctions irrelevant. This fundamentally transforms humanity's identity, consciousness, and societal structures.

Plato's Cave Revisited

In this layer, the concept of Plato's "Allegory of the Cave" takes on a new interpretation. In the allegory, individuals live inside a cave, perceiving only shadows of the real world cast on the wall, unaware of the true reality outside (Plato, trans. 2008). Similarly, in Layer 7, humans live within their virtual "cave," where virtual and real worlds are intertwined, and the boundary between them is blurred. They may see shadows of the physical world, but their primary existence is within the virtual realm.

Integration of Virtual and Real Worlds

At this stage, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies have advanced to the point where virtual and real are inside each other—inseparably connected and coexisting. People live, work, and socialize in virtual environments while still interacting with the physical world. The integration is so seamless that distinguishing between reality and simulation becomes impossible, and both become integral parts of human existence.

Examples and Scenarios

The integration of the Metaverse exemplifies this layer. With advancements in VR and AR technologies, platforms like Meta's (formerly Facebook) Metaverse aim to create immersive virtual worlds where people can work, socialize, and play (Mystakidis, 2022). Theoretical concepts also suggest the possibility of uploading human consciousness into digital substrates, achieving a form of digital immortality (Kurzweil, 2005).

Philosophical and Ethical Implications

This layer raises profound philosophical questions about the nature of reality and existence. If virtual and real worlds are intertwined and one resides within the other, what does "truth" mean? Are virtual experiences as real and meaningful as physical ones? These questions compel us to ponder the nature of consciousness, identity, and reality itself.
