Seven interviews. No job offer. How much time, energy, and opportunity are you losing in the name of landing a job?

Imagine agreeing to seven interviews for a single job. Seven! Not only is this a massive investment of your time, but it also shows a deeper issue that needs to be addressed: the lack of respect some companies have for your time, and the fact that you might not be valuing your own time enough to say “no” when you’re being stretched too thin.
How did we get here? Why would anyone agree to such an extensive, drawn-out process?
It all boils down to the idea that candidates sometimes feel desperate to land a job—any job. But desperation blinds us to the true cost. Seven interviews could easily amount to over 15-20 hours of your time, depending on the length of each. That’s 15-20 hours you could have spent elsewhere—working on a side project, pursuing a personal goal, or focusing on other job opportunities that value your time.
Let’s talk numbers: If you value your time at $25/hour (and many people’s time is worth much more), that’s anywhere from $375 to $500 spent—time that could have been used to generate income or invest in your own future.
The truth is, no job should require you to give so much without commitment in return. If a company truly respected your potential, the process would be more streamlined, transparent, and mindful of your time.
Consider this: What is the opportunity cost? The money you could have made with that time. The personal projects you could have developed. The relationships you could have nurtured. Instead, that time was spent in pursuit of a job that may never come through, leaving you with nothing but wasted energy and missed opportunities.
Let’s face it: If a company is willing to take up hours of your life without any commitment or respect, what kind of culture are they fostering? More importantly, what message are you sending yourself about your worth by continuing to engage in this process?
It’s time to set boundaries. Your time, energy, and skill are incredibly valuable—and you should never settle for a situation that drains you, especially for someone else’s dream. Don’t let the job market convince you otherwise.
If you're ready to reclaim your worth and build a life on your own terms—without compromising yourself for others' validation—start by valuing your time. Let it be a reminder that your time, and your potential, should never be up for negotiation.
