I wish I’d known more about business when I started –other than the myths. Our insistence on continuously lying to each other about business built around ‘myths’ that tripped me up many, many times. I started in business after twenty five years of being viciously bullied at the hands of managers in the education sector. I was burnt out and destroyed of any confidence.
?If I was setting up a business empowering hr, leaders and neurodivergents to confidently succeed today I’d do things a lot different. ? - I’d take the time to seek out advice of professionals within my sector and ignore the general buzz of lies.
Most people are struggling to make money. Lying is now such a common part of UK life now that most people deny they ever do it.
- I’d believe I have what it takes and not let myself get shouted down by all the ‘experts.’ We are so hooked on looking out for experts we never trust our own wisdom and intelligence.
- I’d find out the average gestation period for a business and not assume it was going to go great guns in less than 5 years. All those who brag about instant success or again the ‘experts’ ?that promise to increase our income by depleting us of the little we already have have are, in my humble opinion, immoral.
- I’d have ?the courage to be more myself and not soak up all that toxic positivity about how we need to show up. Nor would I be taken in by those who talk about their own traumatic experience but have virtually no interest in anyone else.
- I’d take a different approach to leads and know networks take time to gather especially for disabled people like me who CANNOT do face to face so it takes longer. Not fair– the lie is that disabled people are looked out for in business.

No we are not. It is just another lie.
Nor would I seek out support groups that seek to reenforce our isolation through ‘othering’ and blaming.
- I’d have more compassion for my mental and physical health, both of which were in shocking disarray at that point. The thing about being terminally anxious and filled with self-hatred is we get used to it so don’t even know – most of the UK are in that situation.
What would you do differently if you were setting up in business or starting an important project all over again?

3 周Your notes about lying resonated with me. I don't think that people do this on purpose; I think that people are conditioned to tell half-truths. I think that it feels too vulnerable for people to tell the truth. Despite all of these obstacles, you did it, and you should be proud of what you have accomplished.

3 周Wow, Neil, there's so much wisdom and TRUTH here! I can't even begin to make a list of things I would do differently, knowing what I know now. If I had to choose one, it would be not chasing every shining object that promises the only REAL answers ??.
