Setting the things right!

Setting the things right!

When I see around, I see unhappy, mostly confused people. They are always unsatisfied with something or the other. The other day I was travelling in a bus, when at one particular stop, a women boarded the bus. The bus was full and so no one bothered to stood up since it was a evening time, everyone was heading back to home and was tired. On the next stop, the girl next to me got down and this lady quickly grabbed the seat.

Then, she started complaining of the fact that no one around has the courtesy to stand up or even care a bit about others, that the generation has drastically changed and it went up to the economy changes and what not. That got me thinking, that she looked perfectly normal while she was standing, but when she got the chance to complain she didn’t stopped. Doesn’t this happen in our real lives all the time?

We often tend to do something, showing that we are full interested but given a tiny tinge to complain, and we don’t stop. We start pointing out to every nooks and corners of the situation in our heads, but to others we show we deeply care! Isn’t it a paradox in its own nature?

Expectation Setting is by so far the most human competent nature and yet it is the most underrated one!. From the early times, humans co-exist by setting the expectations whether by stating it explicitly or by considering it by default. Expectations over a long period of time turns into ritual/norm/value and build the very basis of our culture and values. They need not be said explicitly cause they have been build over time! Coming to professional life, expectation setting sets a major role in defining the type of corporate junkie you’ll become. Speaking up and setting things straight might lead you in troubles in the beginning but will define the type of character you’ll portray throughout your career.

Most often, we fail to do this major component right and then we go on to our endless list of complains. If you always accept too much work, people will take that as your behavior and set those expectations (implicitly) and then you might end up feeling undervalued and over burdened. Your efforts might be taken for granted and you’ll always be stuck in that loop forever.

So, my advice to you is take a chance! What worst it might lead to… At least it will show that you had the guts to speak up for yourself. And maybe half of the time you’ll get things done easily without feeling frustrated.

Keep it simple and sorted! And see how life will do wonders for you!
