Setting the Table for Those in Need

Setting the Table for Those in Need

?The holiday season is upon us, and with it the many demands on our attention as we prepare for travel or visitors, hosting parties, or finding the perfect gifts for everyone on our lists.

?The center of so many of the seasonal celebrations that bring us together is food – abundant, festive, and nourishing for the body and the spirit. But food is much more than a holiday treat. It’s a core human need. That’s why it’s so critical to devote some of our focus, as the season kicks into high gear, on the many people who face food insecurity every day of the year, including a soaring number of kids.

?According to the 2022 Hunger Report released recently by the Capital Area Food Bank, the ongoing Covid 19 crisis, along with rising inflation and continuous shifts in the global economy, continue to impact food insecurity in the DC metro area. Households with children were found to be twice as likely to be affected, with a staggering 49% of those across the region having experienced food insecurity at some point during the last year.

?With so many of our neighbors and community faced with these challenges, this season of abundance should also be a time of giving to those in need. The JK Community Farm was established with that sole purpose and fulfills its mission by donating all of its organically grown, volunteer-planted and harvested produce to the food insecure. Since the Farm is a 501c3 non-profit, it relies on the help of people like you, whether for donations or for your time volunteering.

How the JK Community Farm Helps Feed the Food Insecure

JK Community Farm, launched in 2018 by JK Moving and our sister company CapRelo, has a straightforward mission: to provide food education and alleviate food insecurity with nutrient-dense produce and protein. As our farm and its reach have grown, we’ve learned a great deal about the extent to which hunger impacts our community and doubled down on our commitment, increasing production year-over-year to meet the ever-increasing demand. With our food pantry partners serving 4x the amount of people they have in years past, the JK Community Farm is a lifeline for families and individuals of all ages who do not know where their next meal is coming from. For 2022, the Farm expects to produce nearly 230,000 pounds of food, which we are able to do thanks to over $333,000 in donations from last year.

Giving Back With #GivingTuesday

This year, #GivingTuesday will fall on Tuesday, November 29, and the JK Community Farm aims to raise $500,000 through community donations and corporate partnerships to help us increase the varieties of produce we provide to meet the nutritional and cultural needs of our community. Every donation will be matched by JK Moving Services, so please help us put this commitment to work! For every $1 that is donated, a person in need receives 1.8 pounds of local, fresh, chemical-free food – and $35 will feed someone for 2 full weeks. Imagine how much your individual donation could help. And imagine how your business could make a difference, right here in our community, if it pledged just $35 per employee!

Please, join us in helping those most in need with Giving Tuesday. Donate on the Farm’s website today.??#stophunger #fightinghunger
