SETTING THE RIGHT GOALS INCREASES YOUR PRODUCTIVITY

SETTING THE RIGHT GOALS INCREASES YOUR PRODUCTIVITY

Goals Can be good for us... and sometimes they can feel like a burden.

The most successful lawyers are those who set goals and stick with them no matter what. However, we are all humans and have different strengths and weaknesses. Acknowledge where you are. The worst thing someone can do is compare yourself to others.

Once you decide what you want to accomplish, you want to devise a plan to achieve those results. It really feels good to achieve a goal. The problem with goals is that many lawyers start a goal and then forget about them.

If you find yourself Starting
and then always stopping goals,
it can become very discouraging.

No one wants to not accomplish their goals. It is just that life happens.

An emergency at work. A case you are working on goes wrong. You lose a big client. You get a migraine or don't feel well. A child gets sick. You can have family problems. You go on vacation or a holiday weekend happens. You can easily get so sidetracked that you forgot where you started. That is why many lawyers have a coach.

The same thing applies to most athletes. They wouldn't work so hard to achieve their goals and become winners without someone to push them past their normal limits—That's why many lawyers realize they can use support in setting goals and making plans. Beginning a new goal works for the first three days; maybe a week or two is the norm.

Setting goals isn't about being too hard on yourself or beating yourself up.

Meet Rodney

I had a client whom I will call Rodney was a big goal setter. Rodney routinely read self-help books and often took seminars, always wanting to learn new things. He even paid for some of these programs hoping to accomplish his goals. When he came to me, Rodney was frustrated because he never seemed to be able to attain his goals for some reason.

I detected Rodney was what I call a "Romancer of Goals." In other words, he loved to learn new things and make goals. He loved telling others about his goals. The problem came with the execution of these plans. Somehow for one reason or another, he never achieved them.

Rodney was constantly starting and stopping. When we began working together, I explained that it doesn't matter if he only set one goal. He must see the one goal through to the end.

Rodney Becomes Accountable

I held Rodney accountable for his one goal to increase his business by getting new clients. Additionally, I gave him a second goal of organizing his law practice. Day by day and week by week, I made sure that he stayed the course.

Soon he enjoyed having his desk and practice and caseload completely organized. His focus on rainmaking helped him get great leads, and within a little more than 90 days, he had landed a great client that caused him to increase his income by 30%.

Rodney's Roadmap of Setting & Achieving His Goals

  1. We began by Rodney identifying a goal and led to setting up his strategic plan.
  2. Rodney was ready to be accountable to me as his coach.
  3. The major goal was for Rodney to increase his income and scale his law practice, so he stayed the course.
  4. Just like Rodney, you too can find ways to delegate so that you have time to relax and make more money. Working hard doesn't necessarily mean making more money.
  5. Rodney learned that working hard is not necessarily working smart. Being tired, exhausted, irritable, stressed, and discouraged does not get one closer to a goal.

Just like working with Rodney you can have the following results:
