Setting new habits: paying regular visits to your body.

Why paying a visit to your body when it has always been there, doing what you asked it to do all these years? The truth is that our body has got much more to tell us about how we live, what works and what does not work for us. And while we are at it, reflecting on how we could make next year even better for our selves, our health, our body and performance at work, our body is definitely a place where to start looking for answers. Physical tensions, headaches and back problems, read on. Because being more conscious of your body is the necessary starting point to a better and sustainable health in your business and personal life.

Coming down from your all-mighty & busy mind.

As we just mentioned, mind and body are your best team mates. They work together and it can become difficult in the long run for the former to achieve amazing results when the latter is not being cared for. So if you have mostly been leading your days, years and your life from your busy and talented mind so far, try to pay a visit to your body for a change. Your body is making everything your mind asked for, every single day and minute of your life so it is worth a few minutes of attention at least once a day, don’t you think so? 

Listen to what your body has to say.

Let’s start by turning off the judgemental mind chatter. We are not attempting to judge our body, its shape, size or performance more than we do tend to do already. Instead start to breathe consciously and naturally there, and see if you can sense any part of your body that feels a bit more tense, Slowly, start linking the dots. My right shoulder is tense, can I stretch a little bit there? How am I sitting now, do I cramp myself up, raising the shoulders to the ears when I write my emails? Oh wait, don’t I always carry my bag on the right side with half of my belongings inside? See, that is your body starting to talk to you there and giving you tips to make it feel better and to reflect on your daily routine. So take the habit to listen, it is worth it.

There are issues in your tissues.

It is a fact, psychological and emotional tensions like to store themselves in our body. And as long as we ignore them, they keep adding up, settling deep in our tissues - muscles and organs alike - making them tighter, painful, sometimes even compromising their functionality. When we reach this point, we may then drag our worked up body to a therapist who will make an incredible job at putting our body back into place and might also ask us whether or not we have been experiencing stress lately.

Investigate, be curious at the first signs of discomfort.

Now, if we took all these stiffnesses and aches in our body, even at the most subtle stage of discomfort and started to listen, enquire and understand what our body attempts to communicate, we could learn to make small adjustments to the way we work or live. Going up for a walk and stretching our back when we sit at a desk all day. Realising that we carry too much weight and tension on our shoulders and perhaps reconsidering our workload and amount of responsibilities. Acknowledging that our jaws are tense or that our stomach is cramping up and asking ourselves if there is anything we feel angry or anxious about. See what comes up to the surface when you start investigating. Be open and curious to what these tensions and sensations might reveal to you. This is in no way replacing a visit to your therapist, but if you allow yourself to be aware and inquisitive about what your body tells you, it will make your visit surely a more fruitful and insightful one.
