In my previous article, I explained how important a process of self-reflection is for self-improvement and growth, especially when accompanied by a coach in a coaching process. This sparked several questions from readers, "When is the right time for me to end the coaching session?" and "What should I start from a coaching process when I (as a manager) coach my team?"
Since coaching is a journey process that takes the coachee or client from the present point to a destination point in the future, it is important to start by inviting the coachee to set goals for the coaching session. With this goal, the coaching conversation will flow, and be on its track to achieve the goals. You, as a leader or manager who will deliver a coaching session to your team, can start with goal setting.
Setting goals is an essential aspect of personal and professional growth. However, not all goals are created equal. To increase the chances of success and fulfillment, it is important to set meaningful and achievable goals. With the support of a coach or you as a leader who practices coaching, individuals can gain clarity, define purposeful objectives, and develop a roadmap for success. Let’s explore more the process of setting meaningful and achievable goals with the assistance of a coach.
The Role of a Coach in Goal Setting
A coach plays a vital role in the goal-setting process. They are being present in providing support and accountability to individuals, ensuring that goals are meaningful, aligned with values, and attainable. Coaches ask thought-provoking questions, help identify strengths and areas for improvement, and facilitate the development of strategies to overcome obstacles. With their expertise, coaches empower individuals to set ambitious yet realistic goals and work towards their desired outcomes.
Step 1: Self-Reflection and Clarity
The first step in setting meaningful and achievable goals is self-reflection. A coach helps individuals explore their values, passions, and aspirations. Through deep introspection, individuals gain clarity about what truly matters to them. This self-awareness forms the foundation for setting goals that are aligned with their authentic selves. You can actually read my last article on The Power of Self-Reflection.
Step 2: SMART Goals
SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-Bound) goals provide a clear framework for effective goal setting. With the support of a coach, individuals can define goals that are specific, well-defined, and measurable. Goals should also be attainable, taking into account available resources, skills, and circumstances. Coaches assist in ensuring that goals are relevant to an individual's larger vision and aspirations. Additionally, setting a deadline or timeline for achieving the goals creates a sense of urgency and focus.

Step 3: Breakdown into Actionable Steps
Once meaningful goals are established, a coach helps individuals break them down into actionable steps. By breaking goals into smaller, manageable tasks, the path toward achievement becomes clearer. Coaches assist in identifying the necessary actions, setting milestones, and developing a roadmap to progress steadily toward the desired outcomes.
Step 4: Accountability and Support
Accountability is a crucial element in goal achievement. A coach provides ongoing support, encouragement, and accountability to individuals. Regular coaching sessions help individuals stay on track, overcome challenges, and celebrate milestones. Coaches also assist in adjusting strategies as needed and offer guidance to ensure individuals remain focused and motivated.
Step 5: Reflection and Revision
Goal setting is not a rigid process. A coach encourages individuals to reflect on their progress regularly. Through reflection, individuals can evaluate their achievements, identify areas for improvement, and make necessary revisions to their goals and strategies. Coaches guide individuals in embracing a growth mindset, viewing setbacks as learning opportunities, and adapting their goals as circumstances change. At the end of the coaching session, you can also check how close the results achieved from the coaching conversation were to the goals set. So that we can know when and how to end a coaching session (or even continue it in the next session)
Setting meaningful and achievable goals is a collaborative process that benefits greatly from the support of a coach. With their expertise as a coach, individuals gain clarity, define SMART goals, break them down into actionable steps, and receive ongoing accountability and support. Through reflection and revision, individuals can continuously refine their goals and move closer to their desired outcomes. So, if you are looking to set meaningful and achievable goals, consider partnering with a coach who can provide the guidance and support needed to unlock your full potential.
