Have you ever assigned or delegated a task or project, only to be disappointed when it wasn't completed as you had hoped?
I know I have.?
I learned if I did not set the expectations with the person I gave the task or project it was my fault.?I was responsible for it not being accomplished in the way or time frame I expected.
I was often blaming the person I gave the task or project, but noticed I had three fingers pointing back at myself.
This is a common conversation that I have with executives and sales leaders.
They tell me they gave someone on their team a project, but they did not get it completed on time.
I ask them if they told the team member the time frame they expected to have it completed.
They say, I told them it was important. I ask, did you tell them the date you wanted it completed? They respond, well no not exactly.
I explain that is the main reason it did not get done on time. You did not give them the expected date of completion.
Here are some common expectations to set when assigning a task or project:
On longer projects it is important to have weekly check-ins to determine if the project is on track and if there is anything you can do to help them.
It is also important to have measurements on longer projects. This enables you to see where you are at on the project and determine if there may be delays or additional resources needed.
Finally it is critical that the person that has been given the task or project be told to let you know if the task or project is not going to be completed on time.?
Be Audacious!
