Setting the Benchmark for HR!
I want to share a concern that's been on my mind for a while—one that seems to be growing more pronounced with the rise of AI
???Anyone thinks they can be HR!
It’s easy to see why: HR is an extremely unregulated industry.
?What do I mean by this
Unlike most professions, HR doesn't require any specific qualifications. Many organisations require a degree, but there is no specialised HR degree (typically, degrees in psychology or business are common).
? For comparison:
? HR, on the other hand, generally only requires a certificate, diploma, or a Bachelor of Business. Certification is not mandatory, which means there are no CPD requirements at all!
?? This is extremely concerning because once you obtain your degree, it’s essentially a “set and forget” situation.
??In Australia, HR is often undervalued. While HR professionals in America are frequently expected to hold certifications from bodies like SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management), many businesses in Australia are unaware of similar certifications. In fact, I’d wager that a significant number of HR professionals here also aren’t aware of HR certification through the Australian Human Resources Institute (more information below).
??HR certification is crucial because it establishes industry standards. It ensures that certified professionals have undergone intensive HR training and are committed to ongoing professional development, with mandatory Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements to maintain their accreditation.
??I believe that every HR professional in Australia should be certified, much like accountants and lawyers. Implementing such a standard would set a benchmark for this vital role, ensuring that all HR practitioners are equipped with the necessary expertise and up-to-date knowledge. Given HR’s fundamental importance in organisations, certification would significantly enhance the professionalism and effectiveness of HR functions.
What are your thoughts? Do you think your industry should have higher standards? Post your comments!

6 个月I agree Nathan. In my industry their are plenty of people who call themselves a coach but have never done any coaching training and are not members of a professional body. Perhaps those in HR should have a HR qualification as well as be a member of a HR professional body.
