SETI Institute
Leading humanity's quest to understand the origins and prevalence of life and intelligence in the universe...
The SETI Institute welcomed five new experts to its Science Advisory Board (SAB), broadening its scope in important scientific and ethical domains essential to understanding life and intelligence in the universe. The new members bring expertise in science communication, ethics and philosophy, animal cognition and intelligence, analysis of extraterrestrial materials, and planetary astronomy. Joining the SAB are: Jordan Bimm (University of Chicago), Chelsea Haramia (Spring Hill College and University of Bonn), Lori Marino (Whale Sanctuary Project and The Kimmela Center for Scholarship-based Animal Advocacy), Keiko Nakamura-Messenger (ExLabs LLC) and Quanzhi Ye (University of Maryland).
SETI Institute Invites Applications for the 2025 William J. Welch Postdoctoral Fellowship
The SETI Institute is pleased to open the call for applications for the 2025 William J. Welch Postdoctoral Fellowship (WJWPF), focusing on "Engineering the Future of Cosmic Exploration." The William J. Welch Postdoctoral Fellowship aims to support exceptional early-career scientists in developing and employing novel instrumentation to answer fundamental questions in astronomy and astrophysics, focusing on the search for extraterrestrial intelligence or technosignatures. The proposed research program should broadly contribute to the mission of the SETI Institute, which is to lead humanity’s quest to understand the origins and prevalence of life and intelligence in the universe and share that knowledge with the world. The application deadline is December 20, 2024.
Internship Opportunity at the SETI Institute
The SETI Institute, a scientific research center dedicated to the search for life in the universe, is pleased to offer two community college students the chance to intern with researchers during the spring semester, 2025.
Celebrating Carl Sagan at 90: He Brought the Cosmos to Us All
Carl Sagan, a master storyteller, ignited the world's imagination with his ability to translate complex science into captivating narratives. His iconic "Cosmos" series and influential novel "Contact" inspired countless minds. Sagan's legacy as a science communicator endures, making science not just accessible but deeply inspiring and human.

Comet C/2023 A3 Did Not Disappoint
These past couple months, observers across the world observed Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinan-Atlas) as it flew by our planet. This icy visitor from the distant Oort Cloud, was just discovered last year and had the world wondering if it would become naked-eye in 2024 as it was warmed by the Sun. And it did not disappoint!
SETI Live Replay: How to Kill an Asteroid with Dr. Robin George Andrews
OSIRIS-REx and the Hayabusa spacecraft have sample asteroids to understand what they're made of. NASA sent the DART mission to change the orbit of a tiny asteroid orbiting another asteroid. ESA sent Hera as a follow-up mission to see what the impactor did. All of these missions have been done in the name of planetary defense -- protecting Earth from the worst of the rocks in space.
Big Picture Science: Amazing Amazonia
The Amazon is often described as an ecosystem under dire threat due to climate change and deliberate deforestation. Yet there is still considerable hope that these threats can be mitigated. In the face of these threats, indigenous conservationists are attempting to strike a balance between tradition and preserving Amazonia. Meanwhile, two river journeys more than 100 years apart – one by a contemporary National Geographic reporter and another by “The Lewis and Clark of Brazil”— draw attention to the beauty and diversity of one of the world’s most important ecosystems.
Planetary Picture of the Day - Week of November 4, 2024
We turn our eyes further out into the galaxy this week, toward the heart of the Milky Way, distant stars and supernovae, and a wandering comet due to return in less than 40 years.
Our mission is to lead humanity's quest to understand the origins and prevalence of life and intelligence in the universe and share that knowledge with the world.
