As a kid, I was captivated by the film Sneakers, and I wasn't alone – it was a cult classic among the hacker and phreaker communities. A blend of espionage, cryptography and the ethical dilemmas of technology struck a chord with me.

Last week, I discussed the fascinating role of AI in data compression and decompression, exploring how these emerging technologies are redefining our approach to managing information. Today, I want to pivot to a new, equally intriguing concept: the potential of AI in the realm of Setec Astronomy.

For those who haven’t seen Sneakers, it revolves around a mythical black box capable of breaking any encryption, a concept epitomized by the anagram Setec Astronomy, or Too Many Secrets. This idea echoes in today's technological landscape, where AI's growing capabilities bring us closer to a reality where the once-fictional power to uncover Too Many Secrets might not be so far-fetched.

The Enigma of Setec Astronomy and Anagrams

In Sneakers, Setec Astronomy is more than just a mysterious label - it's an anagram that, when rearranged, reveals Too Many Secrets. This clever twist in the film is not just a play on words but a pivotal narrative element reflecting the core theme: the power of the black box to decrypt and expose concealed information.

In the realm of AI, this analogy gains new significance. As per my previous post, today's AI technologies particularly in data compression and cryptography are akin to uncovering too many secrets. They hold the potential to unlock, interpret and repurpose vast amounts of data in ways that were previously inconceivable.

AI in Data Compression – A Quick Recap

Last week's discussion on AI in data compression highlighted how AI has significantly improved the efficiency and effectiveness of compression algorithms. These advancements are not just theoretical but have practical implications for data storage, transmission and accessibility. AI's ability to handle diverse data types, from text to images to audio, underscores its versatility and hints at a future where data management becomes more streamlined and efficient.

Compression Pivots to Decryption

But AI's potential extends far beyond compression. A significant and emerging area of interest is AI's role in decryption. Recent advancements have brought to light the possibility (and still in hot dispute) of AI algorithms breaking encryption, a scenario reminiscent of the Setec Astronomy concept in Sneakers. While still not 100% proven, the theory is interesting since compression and decompression are both parallels and have been be applied to cryptography.

For instance, the discussion in breaking CRYSTALS-Kyber, a cryptographic algorithm believed to be secure against quantum attacks, was apparently defeated by using AI. Researchers utilised advanced neural network training methods like recursive learning to successfully plain text encrypted messages.

This development could be a game-changer if proven to be real. It suggests that AI, particularly with its growing computational prowess and advanced learning algorithms, could potentially decipher codes and encryption methods that were once considered unbreakable. The implications of this are profound. In a digital world where encryption safeguards everything from personal communications to national security secrets, the ability of AI to crack these digital safes poses new challenges and questions.

However, it's not just about the capability to break encryption. This transition also signifies a shift in how we perceive and utilize AI in cybersecurity. Traditionally, AI has been seen as a tool for defense, fortifying systems against breaches and attacks. But now, we must consider AI as a double-edged sword – one that can protect but also has the power to penetrate sophisticated security measures. And a reality check that all technologies have a dual-use model.

This raises critical questions about the future of encryption. How do we develop cryptographic methods that can withstand the onslaught of AI-powered attacks? Can AI itself be a part of the solution, perhaps in developing new, more robust forms of encryption? As AI continues to evolve, so does the landscape of cybersecurity threats. We need to be proactive in understanding these threats and developing countermeasures.

The Ethical Dilemma and Future Prospects

This brings us to an important crossroad: the ethical implications of AI in decryption. How do we balance the benefits of AI's powerful data processing capabilities with the potential risks to privacy and security? As technology continues to advance, it's crucial that we consider these questions and work towards solutions that safeguard our digital world while harnessing the potential of AI.

Governments and the Double-Edged Sword of AI Decryption

The advent of AI-powered decryption technologies presents a paradoxical reality for national governments and the global community. Consider the applications: on one hand, governments could leverage such technologies to reinforce their own cryptosystems, making them impervious to adversaries; on the other, they face the daunting task of protecting sensitive state secrets against AI-driven cyber threats.

Cryptography sits at the heart of national defense, concealing communication and securing data against espionage and cyber warfare. The potential of AI to decrypt previously unassailable systems could tilt the scales, equipping governments with a tool of unprecedented power – akin to a digital master key. However, as these capabilities grow, so does the conflict between the need for state security and individual privacy, raising vital questions about governance and oversight.

Furthermore, just as governments could use AI to decrypt, they might also need to defend against the same technology in the hands of non-state actors. The democratization of AI means that the same tools within the reach of nations are accessible to rogue groups and individuals, introducing a new era of asymmetric digital threats.

The dialogue on AI's role in decryption is not confined to technologists and security experts; it extends to policymakers, diplomats, and citizens worldwide. As we ponder the potential of our New Setec Astronomy through the prism of AI, we must also consider its place in the tapestry of international relations and governance.

Pete Great food for thought and discussion in your article. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/jul/11/microsoft-nsa-collaboration-user-data Perhaps some of your younger readers may not remember the MSFT/NSA back door scandal although it was only 10 years ago. Maybe I am overly cynical that governments and capitalism can truly behave ethically and every day when I open the Guardian app on my phone I see little to change that view. I will however, ever remain hopeful.
