Every great journey has its defining moments- the highs that inspire and the lows that challenge. For Orlando City SC, the 2024 MLS season was filled with both. Entering the Eastern Conference Final as the?fan-favorite team, they had momentum, home-field advantage, and high hopes against a lower-seeded opponent. Yet, in a dramatic turn, the New York Red Bulls ended their championship dreams, bringing an inspiring playoff run to an unexpected close.
After the match, head coach Oscar Pareja summed up the emotional toll of the loss:
“It’s difficult today to talk about it. Our frustration is bigger, and we are beaten inside.â€
This quote resonates with anyone who’s experienced a setback, those moments when frustration and disappointment feel insurmountable. Yet, it’s precisely in these moments that growth is possible.
Mistakes and setbacks are inevitable in sports - and in life. But they don’t have to define us. What matters most is how we respond.
Here are?five practical ways to turn setbacks into a setup for growth:
1. Seek Guidance from Your Champion
We all need someone in our corner - a mentor, coach, or trusted friend. They help us see what we might have missed and offer clarity when emotions are high. Lean on them to break down the setback and rebuild your confidence.
2. Take a Break to Reset
Sometimes the best way forward is to step away. Whether it’s a hike, a weekend getaway, or some quiet time at your favorite fishing spot, taking a break can help you refocus and regain perspective.
3. Turn Your Setback into a Story
Every mistake has a lesson hidden within it. Turning your experience into a story can be empowering, not just for you, but for those you share it with. You never know who might be inspired by your journey.

4. Hold Yourself Accountable
It’s easy to point fingers, but real growth starts with looking inward. What role did you play in the setback? Accountability is a powerful tool for learning and improvement.
5. Be a Goldfish When Needed
If you’re replaying the setback over and over, it’s time to let go. As Ted Lasso says, “Be a goldfishâ€, and forget quickly and move on with a clean slate.
Mistakes Are Inevitable. Growth Is Optional.
Setbacks are a natural part of progress, whether you’re chasing a championship or pursuing personal and professional goals.
How will you turn your next setback into a setup for growth?
Remember: Mistakes will happen - see them as a learning opportunity.
Let’s turn those setbacks into setups for success. I’d love to hear your thoughts, how do you handle setbacks?
