Set yourself up for success in 2023
Hello! And welcome to the final CNBC Work It newsletter of 2022!
Show of hands, please: Who’s ready to make New Year’s resolutions? ??♀?
And who is ready to break them? ??
I know. We are all guilty of breaking resolutions, despite our best intentions.
Whatever your New Year’s resolution is, we can all agree on one thing: We want to be successful in 2023. So, here are some tips to help you find success. ???
Tune out the noise
It’s easy to get inundated with opinions from friends and family about what you should do with your life – especially around the holidays!
The key to success is tuning out the noise, said Tess Brigham, a San Francisco-based psychotherapist.
The voice that matters is yours, Brigham said.
(Though, maybe I wouldn’t phrase it exactly that way to your mom.)
Brigham offers a few key tips to help you find your path, including:
? Play detective to figure out what your patterns are and where you might be wasting time.
? Identify positive changes you can make.
? Set aside time for monthly check-ins on your goals and your progress.

Get organized
Many of us fall into the trap thinking that if we just work hard enough, we will be successful.
For sure, hard work is part of it but there’s a lot more to it. One of the biggest things?
Getting organized.
If you want to be successful, the first skill you need to master is organization, said millionaire entrepreneur Bethenny Frankel.
“I don’t think I could have this bandwidth without being so organized,” she said. “I can do 10 times the amount that somebody else can do by being so organized.”

That means organizing everything from your time to your ideas and your priorities.
And don’t procrastinate, thinking you’ll get it done tomorrow or the next day.
“Procrastination is the thief of time,” Frankel said. “Check the box. Get it done. Move on.”
Of course, that doesn’t mean work nonstop, have no fun and get no sleep. Frankel said all of those things are very important for recharging your battery and being able to keep going. The key is just to get yourself organized.
Don’t settle for great
When you look at successful people like Microsoft founder Bill Gates or NBA superstar LeBron James, the key difference is that they don’t just want to be great at something, they want to be the best there’s ever been, said retired Navy SEAL David Goggins, who is now a motivational speaker and New York Times best-selling author.
And even when they do become the best? They don’t just take a victory lap and yell – “I’m the best!”
Goggins says that’s what’s called the “I arrived” mindset that you want to avoid.
“Everybody has these bars,” Goggins said, whether it’s becoming CEO or losing 25 pounds. “[A]nd once you get there, you’ve made it. There’s a party. There’s a big celebration. People are invited. There’s a trophy. Maybe there’s a bonus check. Maybe you wear some big thing on your uniform. Who knows what it is, but it’s a completion of something.”
Successful people? They don’t think in terms of completion, Goggins said. So, they achieve their goal of becoming CEO. Then they say, “How can I be a better CEO? How can I be a better person? What else can I do?” ??
They stay hungry. They keep achieving.
We’ll talk more about success in 2023 but for now, let’s all recharge our batteries. Work on tuning out the noise. Getting organized with everything, from our New Year’s resolutions to our career goals. And, let’s never stop reaching for the next big thing.
Happy New Year! ?? Wishing you great success in 2023! ??
