Set the plan and lead

I visited my local Starbucks to work for a while. It was a quiet day, and a few people were set up around me with their computers.

I noticed one of them moved around the cafe, and then into the back room.

“I wonder if he is the Store Manager?” I asked myself. Turns out he was a Store Manager of a new Starbucks being built 15 min away.

Shortly after, he had a younger girl come sit with him. He began by thanking her, and explaining when his store would open, and that she had some issues with her availability. He wanted to make sure that she handled that for the upcoming schedules.

He went through the process of getting her set up and making sure that all was well.?

During the chit-chat, I overheard him say “Please understand, we will have 22 employees at first. We need to make sure that everyone is on the same page with things like availability and schedules. I can not do this for you, that is not part of my job while we open the store, I will be too busy and it will be too crazy.”

I was shocked. My mind was blown.???

Yes, it is not his job to make sure that people offer up their schedules for their own availability, but it is his job to make sure this is handled and handled correctly.

Each person is different. That means people require different things, just like how he brought the new barista in to handle that alone.

I wanted to say something, People over Profit. Each person should be led individually.?

Maybe I was not giving him the benefit of the doubt. I did talk to him about the new store and he was very excited.?

He told me he had 22 new employees, and it was going to be a challenge opening and leading.

Trust me, It is not. The opening itself will be a challenge, the business will take your plan, crumble it up, and throw it away.

Yet if you lead the people, it will work.

If he leads the people, the opening will go smoothly. If he sets the plan, and that plan is set WITH his people, the opening will fly by and all mistakes will be taken in stride.

Yes, you would have challenges, but leading the people is really not the hard part if you lead them individually.?

Good Luck sir!

Hopefully that manager finds a mentor or does some self-reflecting down the line.
