?? Set or Parameter Action? Find Out NOW!

Ever found yourself staring at Tableau's Set and Parameter Actions, wondering which one to use?

You're not alone.

I've seen even experienced analysts freeze up when deciding between the two.

Here's the thing: both Set and Parameter Actions can take your dashboards from static to actionable.

But choosing the wrong one is like using a hammer when you need a screwdriver - it just creates frustration.

Let me break it down for you:

Set Actions: Your Go-To for “Group” Decisions

Think of Set Actions as your friendly bouncer at a club - they decide who's in and who's out.

Set action are perfect for:

  • Highlighting specific data points across multiple views
  • Creating on-the-fly groupings
  • Filtering data based on user selections

Parameter Actions: Your “Individual” Winner

Parameter Actions are like a volume knob - they control one thing at a time.

Use them when you need to:

  • Adjust thresholds dynamically
  • Switch between different metrics
  • Fine-tune visualizations on the fly

Quick Tip: Still unsure?

Ask yourself this: “Am I working with multiple data points or a single value?”

Multiple = Set Action.

Single = Parameter Action.

"I know the theory, but when do I actually use each one?"

Sound familiar? I break down exactly that in my webinar recording, walking through examples to break down the mystery.

What I’m reading

Blow Back by James Patterson is a gripping, action-packed thriller. Just what I need every once in a while!

The story revolves around a President who becomes (familiarly) unhinged and the covert CIA agents racing to stop his plans.

It’s full of espionage, betrayal, and shifting alliances. It keeps you guessing about who can be trusted.

What makes Blow Back so captivating to me is its unpredictability. Just when you think you’ve figured it out, another twist changes everything.

As a stand-alone novel, it’s easy to dive right in without needing to follow a series. If you enjoy fast-paced stories full of suspense, this one is a must-read.

2025 is your opportunity to 10x your skills using my?proven training framework. You will become a Tableau Expert with Next-Level Tableau.

I guarantee it or your money back.

P.S. 2025 planning is complete and this will be the most advanced curriculum ever taught.

I find I use paramete actions a lot as a substitute for filter actions when I’m working across different published data sources I can’t easily blend/join/relationship, but that share a common dimension. ie. I can’t technically filter all the different views in a dashboard by a state because the data source are not connected, but they do all have state as a field and I can’t set up a boolean filter (if all then true, else state param=state) to still get them to sync.?
