Set The Boundaries @ Work To Prevent Sexual Harassment @ Workplace

"I could see his behaviour was not normal—the way he used to look or sometimes made comments used to make me feel uncomfortable. Unnecessary calls and asking about my relationships were something giving me not-so-good vibes. I wish I could have stopped him there."

These were words I heard during one of the POSH inquiry processes. Often we get indications of not-so-good behaviour, but we tend to ignore saying, " Muje he aisa lag raha hoga".

Most of us tend to ignore the early signs of sexual harassment, and another person gets the courage to cross the line, and then the same persona says, "Why did you not object at the beginning?"

Sexual harassment is a serious issue that can have long-lasting effects on an individual's well-being and career. Here are some steps you can take proactive actions to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace:

  1. Know about unacceptable behaviour: You must know what kind of behaviour falls under sexual harassment. It is equally important to know what conduct doesn't amount to sexual harassment. Familiarize yourself with the laws and policies related to sexual harassment in the workplace.
  2. Understand the process of filing the complaint: Every organisation has a specific procedure for handling sexual harassment-related complaints. The company policy mentions that clearly. If not, speak to the right people and be well informed about it.
  3. Communicate your boundaries: If you encounter unwelcome behaviour, say NO at the right time. If someone makes you uncomfortable, tell them their behaviour is unwelcome at the right time. Be clear and firm in communicating your boundaries with co-workers or superiors.
  4. Seek support: If you experience sexual harassment, seek support from IC members of your company. Avoid speaking to colleagues; the confidentiality of the case can be at stake.
  5. Report the Behaviour: If you experience unwelcome behaviour, report it to IC members of your company. Companies will take action to address it at the right time.

Just to remind you, you can take proactive steps before someone crosses the line at work.
