? SES: Passion Projects, Discarded Treasures & Jaaring Sounds

READ: I got called out a few times recently by a several of my soul brothers and sisters. Although they came at it from different angles, they all indicated that I'm playing small lately when it comes to my visual art. Sometimes I say that, "I have a voiceover career to support my art habit," but I haven't made much of anything since exhibiting my Instagrammatical series in Chicago last March. I absolutely adore my job as an actor, but it's making art that really makes my blood boil. It's the thing I can do for eight hours straight and not even notice. That's passion, folks.

Sadly, though, it's been getting pushed to the back burner too much lately. Inspired by my friends' feedback and this article right here, I've decided to get back in the art saddle in earnest this next week. What's that thing for you? That thing you can't not do? That thing that captivates your heart so much that you get a little sick and unbalanced if you stay away from it too long? Whatever that may be, I encourage you to make a little space and time to cultivate it this week.

WATCH: One of the underlying threads that runs through my visual art is a concept I alternately refer to as "redeeming the lost" and "finding the beauty in the hideous." I'm a photographic scavenger of streets and alleyways, seeking those little glimpses of sublime color and form that emerge from a chaotic melange of street art or detritus. In this delightful documentary portrait of multidisciplinary artist and beautiful human being, Lonnie Holley, I found a very kindred spirit and new hero this week.

LISTEN: Another favorite artist who weaves beautiful tapestries out of obscure and overlooked things is Chilean-American composer and DJ, Nicholas Jaar. His BBC Radio One Essential Mix is one of my favorite soundtracks for getting into the creative zone.

 Make this week magnificent!
