Entertainment juggernauts like Marvel Studios, Netflix, Lucasfilm, Sony Pictures, HBO and Universal are noticeably absent from this year’s San Diego Comic Con panels. Factors like the WGA writers’ strike and now the SAG-AFTRA strike have left the schedule unexpectedly soft . Normally a frenetic time of star-studded announcements and FOMO-worthy reveals, perhaps this is an opportunity to revisit what made SDCC so fun to begin with: real fan connections and thoughtful experiences that foster community engagement. As one long-time attendee and comic artist states: “It was fun then, it will be fun now.”
