Serving Those Who Serve.
Scott C. Handley
Director of Recruiting @ Vanderbilt University | Strategic Enrollment Management & Talent Acquisition Leader | Founder & Former Naval Officer
When I created Osprey Talent Solutions, one of my goals was to continue serving as a career coach and remain an advocate for our military community, but now in a more formal, accountable capacity. Serving those who serve is one of Osprey's core tenets. One of the many ways that I'm going to do what I can to produce results for our military community is presenting candidates to my network who I believe would be a phenomenal addition to any company and in any industry. I will be presenting candidates here on Linkedin a few times a month and I will usually be doing so without giving their identity as most of these candidates are passively looking for their next career move. So, no names provided, unless I'm given permission from the candidate to do so.
Here are the first two stellar candidates...
Candidate #1: Green Beret, United States Army
A few weeks ago, right after I went public with the news that I created Osprey, I had an opportunity to meet with someone who out-of-the-blue reached out to me because we had mutual friends/colleagues (he knows how to leverage a network). We met for a beer at Modern Times in Point Loma, and after an incredibly productive conversation I realized two things: First, this gentlemen might be one of the smartest individuals I've ever met (even though he is Army, mostly kidding) and second, he might be one of the most marketable people I've ever had an opportunity to assist. He's genuinely interested and qualified in the following areas:
- Technology: Product/Program Management, Strategy & Operations
- Finance: Financial Analyst, Blockchain/Cryptocurrency SME
- Security: He has skills, like solid pew pew skills. Liam Neeson as Bryan Mills once said to his daughter's kidnappers:
What I do have are a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you.
A role in FinTech would be ideal for this talented individual, and of course, a combination of all three would be a dream scenario.
What else does he bring to the table? MBA (Finance), advanced in Excel, Python, Unix, Linux, speaks Mandarin Chinese and the guy is a blockchain expert.
This former Green Beret is sharp, polished, well-spoken and would quickly become your go-to subject matter expert.
Candidate #2: Executive Officer, Scout Sniper Platoon Commander, USMC
Last week I had coffee with an old friend at Moniker General at Liberty Station. This former Marine (I know, once a Marine...) served as a Scout Sniper Platoon Commander and Executive Officer. His service speaks volumes, but what he has done over the past six years in technology sales is mind blowing. His military background served him well as a foundation for growth and success as a civilian and he is more than ready for the next step in his career - in a leadership role here in San Diego.
This business development leader loves his current gig. He's at a great company with good people. However, it may require him to move back to the Bay Area, which he doesn't want to do. Why leave San Diego if you don't have to? While he's keeping his options open, he's concentrating on finding roles that are focused on business development, sales management and operations. The tech industry would be a perfect fit, however, he's also exploring other huge San Diego industries, such as biotech and medical devices.
What else does he bring to the table? MBA, SaaS, Salesforce, Pipeline Development MEDDIC, Enterprise Sales and incredible communication skills.
All of our military branches offer their own distinct ethos and manner in which they train. However, the Marine Corps is unique in their approach. From Task and Purpose:
The Marine Corps really does a great job of breaking down an individual, removing them from the ‘just me’ mindset, then building that individual back up into a ‘team first’ mentality. Along that journey, they teach valuable leadership skill sets used to affect the overall performance of the team in a positive way.
This former platoon commander and XO is a natural leader and mentor, but knows when to follow. He's a proven sales leader and as mature as they come. You want him representing your company in front of clients and your employees. Hiring this Marine and current sales leader is a no brainer.
