Serving on a non-profit board!

Some people ponder on the idea of service because of the extra time on their hands, their desire to give back because they have extra funds to do so, and/or because they are an expert in their field and want to share the knowledge and give advice to an organization that lines up with their mission in life.

Is this you? We want you! You have the concept of time, talent, and treasure down. All non-profit organizations are seeking these types of individuals. Even if they are not equally driven across the board. For example, you are feeling very generous lately and want to sit on a board to donate to their programs but do not have a lot of time. You are still an asset to that board. You may even be an expert in your field that you have held for 15-20 years but do not have a lot of funds, allow your time to raise those funds. This does not make you a "bad" board member.

Board members take on the role of ever changing markets, non-profit rules and regulations change, environments change, and for I Will Survive, Inc., non-profit organization based out of North Georgia, the health care changes affected their programs. This change was a good change and they are adapting and continue to grow.

How do you become a "great" board member? Knowing that board members have the power to make or break a non-profit organization is the beginning motivation to want to succeed and be "great". Time, talent, and treasure are the key ingredients you need and remember, you may not be perfect in any category, as long as you are wiling to learn through training, you will do just fine.

Take the lead, reach out to one non-profit organization a week after thoroughly researching their mission, vision, and values and seeing if it is something you can support. If the organization you choose is I Will Survive, Inc., you have chosen correctly. But really, see if it fits and take action- see you on the other side!
