Let me start off by making clear my bias (world goggles) apparent in writing this article as we all come from different places, peoples, and levels of prosperity or lack thereof. Not that our beginnings make one better or worse (right or wrong), but in the words of my mentors, “just different.”
I grew up in North American society and encountered limited struggles growing up in a middle-class Canadian family from a small town. Throughout my life, I never faced serious strife such as war, hunger, lack of economy, or debilitating abuse. Therefore, I cannot promise that the route I took will lead to success for everyone but the understandings I have gained have benefitted me and have provided an opportunity for a life of abundance, love, and happiness. Please note the following lessons are not the only ways to garner sales success. They are just humble reflections on my experiences over the 33 years of my life thus far. It is a respectful attempt to generate success in your life by incorporating what has aided me in this adventure we call “Life.”
Firstly, I absolutely love people and maximizing their potential for what gift(s) they have to offer the world. This attitude is where a true servant sales mentality starts and is in the heart of “why” we do something. When I attempted to make sales, before I incorporated this “why” mindset, I found myself in a cycle of constant burnout, struggle, and lack of consistency. A "making money attitude" can only motivate you for a limited period time. As caring human beings, I believe we are built for more intrinsic motivations such as helping others, creating new things, and providing value to our communities with an ultimate goal of improving the world around us. I know this is a utopian point of view, but in life, and especially in sales, you have to stay positive, give trust, and have faith in the process or soon hope starts to fade. That being said, you must constantly improve your processes and the questions you ask of others to help attain the greatest value for those you serve.
If your heart is not to be in service for those around you, “do not enter sales”. People today value connection more than anything else and to gain this you need to put your heart into what you do as this “authenticity” is where true success is born.
When you act and serve authentically it will help you enhance the level of trust and give the opportunity to make a greater difference to those around you. Please consider, sales people serve as well as lead from behind as they must be the first one at the event and the last to leave. So, what does authenticity of service look like?
The following, is a brief list with accompanying thoughts to incorporate into your business to consistently demonstrate servant sales mentality:
1. Be honest and truthful as this will allow you to build a wholesome credibility in a cynical world. Honesty, promotes the best interests of others and encourages a vision of long-term success for everyone around you. “Let your actions be your calling card, not your egocentric needs”
2. Always put your customer first: Do not attempt to sell what you cannot provide and make sure the service you provide meets their needs. If you cannot provide a needed service, make referrals to supportive companies that can. This will help you establish trust, energize their business, and you will build strong relationships with referral companies that will be able to serve your clients in the future. Establishing sound and reliable referral companies only heightens your own credibility and loyalty. "First seek to serve, love, and trust then prosperity will quickly follow"
3. Dream build with your clients- Finding out the driving force behind a person’s ambition will help you make effective future referrals, give you compelling topics to speak about, spur the creation of new joint projects in the future, and provide an indelible place in a person’s mind and heart for your advice. “Get deeper with your clients as this will create a long-term ally, friend and customer to grow with”
4. Mature by getting rid of jealousy, childish desire, and materialism- Do not look at the material world and be enticed by things lacking substance such as power, money, fancy things and pride. Put your value in connections with others, shared experiences, growth, progress and most importantly positive relationships. We are told to strive to be our best constantly in life. Having an attitude of serving others as best you can, enjoying improving the world around you and truly knowing that you are doing your part to enable this shift towards a sustainable and ethical future is a noble pursuit. "Listen to the advice and accept discipline, and at the end you will be counted amount the wise. Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the Lord's Purpose that prevails" -Proverbs 19:20-21

5 年I agree. The definition of salesmanship seems to have changed with the advent of Madison Avenue Techniques - we all now have a tendency when we think of sales to use and want to master those classical techniques which really is about control and manipulation for the sake of a sale. One of my mentors Michael Oliver? while quite successful at classical sales would experience an incredible inner tension until he mastered-discovered that putting the client first relieved all that tension and as such came from the position of -natural selling- a term he coined which is coming from service. Another mentor of mine, Jay Abraham would state he would never invest in a company unless they taught their sales persons - consultative sales which really is the difference between marketing in the true sense of the word and sales. Marketing is all about finding a close fit between buyer and seller in an equal exchange of value. Sales verges on the concept of selling people that is coercing people to buy what they may not necessarily need and thus most peoples aversion towards sales and sales persons.? To take it to another level one could say that consultative sales is still another method of control as even though you are coming form the position of your potential clients best interest whether that in fact materializes ultimately is a result of your integrity of character. People can always sense where you are coming from so ultimately mastery in terms of sales and of life is? an indicator of your emotional intelligence and self mastery to truly serve.

5 年Thanks for your article Jordan, much of what you have said is what I have always loved doing in my working career... I came from a very “hard, abused background “, but have always kept a positive mindset. Not everyone is kind in their interactions, but if you can get them to open up a bit, show them some positive, loving energy, it often makes a big difference in their outlook on life.
