Servant Leadership in Anesthesia

Servant Leadership in Anesthesia

In the anesthesia world, the pressures are immense, the stakes are high, and the need for a supportive, compassionate leadership style has never been greater. We’ve seen firsthand how the principles of servant leadership can transform healthcare teams, improve patient outcomes, and reduce burnout among anesthesiologists and CRNAs.

The concept of servant leadership contrasts greatly with traditional leadership models. Instead of prioritizing personal advancement and authority, servant leaders focus on the growth and well-being of their teams.

At NorthStar Anesthesia, we embrace servant leadership by putting our clinicians first. We believe that when our anesthesiologists and CRNAs are well-supported and valued, they are empowered to deliver exceptional care to their patients. This approach creates a positive and sustainable work environment, which encourages professional growth and reduces turnover, something we’re all striving for!

The key principles of servant leadership include:

  • Empathy: Understanding and addressing the unique challenges faced by clinicians.
  • Listening: Actively seeking feedback and ensuring leaders are held accountable.
  • Empowerment: Creating an environment where clinicians can make decisions and take initiative.
  • Stewardship: Providing the resources, support, and opportunities needed for clinicians to thrive.
  • Community: Fostering a strong sense of community and collaboration among clinicians.

One of the core principles of servant leadership to expand on further is empathy. In anesthesia, this means understanding the unique challenges faced by our clinicians and actively seeking to address them. For example, NorthStar Anesthesia recognizes the impact of administrative burdens. By streamlining processes and providing strong administrative support, we enable our clinicians to focus on what they do best - caring for patients.

Another major aspect of servant leadership is listening intently. At NorthStar Anesthesia, we actively solicit feedback from our anesthesiologists and CRNAs through regular evaluations and open lines of communication. This includes upward evaluations, where frontline clinicians assess their department leaders. This feedback mechanism ensures that leaders are held accountable and can continuously improve their support for the team.

We also see our roles at NorthStar as stewards of our clinicians' careers, ensuring they have the resources, support, and opportunities needed to thrive. This includes advocating for their needs, whether it be securing appropriate staffing levels, providing access to the latest medical technologies, or supporting their work-life balance.

Servant leadership is not just a theoretical concept at NorthStar Anesthesia - it is a daily practice that shapes our interactions, our policies, and our culture. By putting our clinicians first, listening to their needs, empowering them to lead, and encouraging a sense of community, we create an environment where both our team and our patients can thrive.

NorthStar’s core values directly coincide with servant leadership principles. Our core values include:

·?????? One Team

·?????? Patient at the Center

·?????? Clinician Focused

·?????? Listen First

·?????? Assume Positive Intent

·?????? Anticipate Change

All too often, groups rely on the old authoritarian methods of “leadership” and it shows in the morale and work ethic displayed in their teams. This was a breath of fresh air. I LOVE the concept of upline evaluations. It’s important that leaders know their areas of strength and areas needing improvement through the eyes of those they are serving…very impactful post, Michelle! Thank you!!
