The Sermon.1

Millions of sermons have been preached since the days of Jesus, but only one of them could be known as “The Sermon.” Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount (Matt 5-7) is probably the most well-known of all the teachings of Jesus.

The Sermon isn’t just counter-culture—sadly, in some ways, it’s counter-Christian culture. And that’s putting it mildly. Sometimes I think that much of the debate over the finer points of the Sermon is an attempt to avoid its plain meaning. It's sort of like this old quote attributed (probably wrongly) to Mark Twain: the researches of many commentators have already thrown much darkness on this subject, and it is probable that, if they continue, we shall soon know nothing at all about it.

In this initial post on the Sermon (7 are planned overall), we present an overview of its context and content, along with a sketch of important ways it has been understood through the centuries.

I hope this new post and the series it begins will help you as you seek to bring glory to the heavenly Father by being salt and light in this world.

All the best

Happy to follow your thoughts. Think Stott called it Christ’s manifesto of the kingdom. I have enjoyed preaching and teaching on SM for years. It calls us to a life of discipleship that is different than much of what conservative Christianity professes.
