A Serious Say What?!

Approximately 40% of personnel who evaluated themselves as highly valued, performed poorly in last year’s reviews, according to BambooHR. That is a SERIOUS lack of understanding about one’s own efforts and value…serious, self-grade inflation is always a problem when someone is getting smacked with reality.

Here are 15 important things to consider so that you don’t get surprised by a 360 evaluation or performance review.

  1. Always try to meet your direct supervisor’s top two objectives.
  2. Establish checkpoint meetings, even if informal, to ensure there are no surprises.
  3. Speak with a trusted confidant who will give you feedback on your performance, regularly.
  4. Avoid company gossip.
  5. Respond to emails early.
  6. Manage expectations.
  7. Under-promise and over-deliver.
  8. Start early and stay late when appropriate.
  9. Find ways to connect with others on a more personal/social level.
  10. Do more personal self-assessments with each project.
  11. Take ownership and accountability.
  12. Stay “Humble and Hungry”
  13. Seek out a mentor or get coaching.
  14. Seek clarity and ask questions.
  15. Look for professional development opportunities.

We need to be our own, honest and best critic so that we are never surprised by someone else’s evaluation of us. Build a better system for giving and receiving feedback and the mystery of why evaluators and evaluates will be solved.

Wishing you all the best and much love!

Dave
