A Serious Resume Question.

My stripped-down, bare-bones resume may make it past the robot readers, but will it deliver the essential information required to land the job?

I am a senior-level creative director/designer, at the top of my game regarding my creative abilities and professional experience. Now that our proverbial nest has emptied, I seek full-time, part-time, or contract employment.

In a job market that increasingly relies on resume-screening software as the initial HR gatekeeper, recruitment professionals highly recommend editing your resume to the bare minimum.?

However, as a creative professional with over 30 years of successful experience, I believe my resume should reflect my full range of skills and accomplishments. A stripped-down summary might get past the robots, but it by no means highlights my vast experience.

As a graphic designer, your resume was one of your most essential marketing tools only a few years ago. A well-designed resume could help you land an interview, while a poorly designed one could cost you the job. Sending personalized physical objects was another proven strategy that might take you to the top of the resume pile. This tactic worked for me both as a job seeker and employer.

I am not anti-robot (well, perhaps mildly opposed), but I am unsure if their nuts and bolts brains can detect creative genius.

I look forward to your thoughts and recommendations!

When HR is looking for a creative they need to switch gears… unlike an accountant, IT professional or even a CEO, a resume only tells half the story. Frankly if I’m searching for a creative I want to see their portfolio first, end of story. No HR person is qualified to review a book, how could they be? I feel I can open a book and in a few clicks see their experience, creativity and professional status. A resume might fill in the blanks. Bot screening will net good resumes but miss some stellar designers. Anywhere I can I drop my link to my website in text or email… curiosity gets the best of them and they look.

You make an excellent point. These resume search systems are all looking for key words/terms and not the whole person or their collective experiences/value. Unfortunately the only way to get by these systems is to provide the terms they are searching for. While I was writing this, HAL, Optimus Prime and Rosey have all asked where you live. #headonaswivel ??
