Serious Journalism and Sunny Weather ??
Hello LinkedIn friends,
Many of you know me as a cycling writer, and at certain times, covering bikes, athletes, and racing can feel...so unserious. One could argue that it's soft journalism, nothing like Woodward and Bernstein, although there are plenty of serious stories in cycling, from multi-national corporations and anti-doping to the dollar sign eyes of the Saudis.
I bring up my sometimes-unserious work to say that it's been refreshing to flex my former serious journalist muscles recently. The very muscles I honed as a student reporter asking powerful people questions they rather I not ask.
This month, I reported on the Durango school board's deliberations over whether or not to allow Pride and Black Lives Matter flags in classrooms. Read the stories for the Colorado Times Recorder here. Spoiler: it was a win for equality as the board approved two resolutions Tuesday, despite threats from Colorado Republicans.
I also began writing for The Denver Gazette and Colorado Springs Gazette. Read my story about how tourism is changing in Durango and a wrap up of the Park City, Utah Ski Patrol strike.
For The Durango Herald, I am now the Action Line columnist after John Peel gave up the reins. My first three columns are online here.
Over on Substack, I covered the closure of the National Cycling League, team moves, and uploaded two podcast episodes with Aaron Gouw of CarbsFuel and Emilly Johnston + Bjorn Riley of Scott-SRAM.
Finally, I'm excited to serve as the president of the Young Professionals of Durango this year! Learn more about what we do and become a member here.
BTW, can you believe that it's been in the 50's recently here in Durango?! I had to take advantage with a bike ride yesterday:
My DMs are always open for questions, concerns, suggestions, and love letters. See you next month.
