The Serial Procrastinator ??
"Aiya, stop your nonsense, you're not busy, I'm just not your priority."?
This was a wake-up call, dropped on me by a client right in the middle of his busy Korean restaurant. We were surrounded by delicious smells and the sounds of a lunch rush, but all I could focus on was his blunt statement.?
At first, it felt like a punch to the gut. He was the marketing manager of the chain, and he was known to be direct and abrasive with his words, but hearing it directed at me was a whole new experience.
He was frustrated, feeling like I wasn't giving his project the attention it needed. Honestly, my first reaction was to get defensive. But after taking a moment to cool down, I started to see he had a point. I had been juggling so much that I ended up putting his work on the back burner, not because it was less important, but because I was overwhelmed and not managing my priorities well.
That tough conversation was a turning point for me. It made me realize that sometimes, when I'm putting things off, it's not just about being busy; it's about not prioritizing right. This experience helped me see procrastination in a new light. It wasn't just about delaying tasks; it was a signal that I needed to look at what I was valuing with my time.
After that day, I began to use those moments of procrastination as a chance to check in with myself, to make sure I was focusing on what really mattered. It was a bit of a journey to get there, and it didn't happen all at once, but that conversation in the restaurant started it all. It taught me to be a bit kinder to myself about getting sidetracked and to see it as an opportunity to adjust course, not just a personal failing.
The Nature of Procrastination
Thinking back to that moment in the Korean restaurant, my client's blunt words served as a stark reminder that not all procrastination is created equal. It made me wonder: Why do we procrastinate??
Is it always a sign of avoidance, or could it sometimes reflect our deeper values and interests??
There are two sides to this coin:?
Rethinking Procrastination: A Positive Spin ????
That confrontation in the restaurant was my first real lesson in the unexpected benefits of procrastination. It led me to an interesting concept: "productive procrastination."?
Imagine delaying one task and finding yourself immersed in another, more fulfilling project. This was a game-changer for me, especially as a dad watching my kids navigate the pressures of the PSLE. Seeing them burnt out made me reevaluate our approach to time and priorities. It was clear that not all delays are detrimental; some can actually signal a need to refocus on what's genuinely important.
Procrastination often tells us something true that we might be ignoring.
Listening to Procrastination: What It Tells Us ??
Procrastination often tells us something true that we might be ignoring. It can point out when we're engaged in work that doesn't align with our core values or when we're simply running on empty.?
As a father, I've learned to see these moments not just as personal failings but as crucial signals for rest or reassessment. After the intense PSLE period, recognizing when my kids needed a break became pivotal to supporting their well-being and success. ????
The Role of Procrastination in Creativity and Problem-Solving ???
I was struggling with a difficult campaign pitch for an ad. I was completely out of steam, staring blankly at my computer screen, the deadline looming.?
I was so tired, so I walked away to take a break, and found myself napping over the dining table. It was during this break, while mindlessly doodling, that an idea sparked.?

The break that I didn’t know I needed allowed my subconscious to work through the problem, leading to a breakthrough that felt both innovative and genuinely exciting. This was procrastination at its finest—fueling creativity through a necessary step back.
Strategies for Harnessing Procrastination
Learning from my own patterns of delay, especially after the Korean restaurant incident, I started to sync my work with times when I felt most energized and inspired. This approach has been crucial in balancing my professional responsibilities with being present for my children, especially during their high-stress school periods.
I've also embraced mindful procrastination. Instead of fretting over unproductive moments, I now see them as opportunities for deliberate rest or to pursue hobbies that recharge my creativity. This shift in perspective has been a game-changer, allowing me to return to work refreshed and with a clearer mind.
Procrastination taught me to listen closely to my instincts about what tasks truly excite me. This was a lesson learned the hard way, through experiences like facing my client's blunt critique and witnessing my children's academic burnout. It's helped me realign my priorities, focusing my energy on projects that are not just urgent but meaningful.
When Procrastination Becomes a Problem ????
It's crucial, however, to recognize the line between constructive and destructive procrastination. The journey through my kids' PSLE and my own professional challenges taught me the importance of seeking balance and knowing when to ask for help or adjust strategies to prevent burnout.
Conclusion
Procrastination, as I've learned, isn't always the villain it's made out to be.?
From a challenging client interaction to navigating my children's education stresses, and even finding creative solutions in my work, procrastination has served as a guide, a moment of pause, and a creative catalyst. It's taught me to tune into my needs and those of my family, transforming how we approach challenges and prioritize our time.
I’ve now learnt to admit, albeit silently in my head rather than being rude and speaking it bluntly, that, “this is not a priority” rather than “I don’t have time”.
I encourage you to take a moment and reflect on your own experiences with procrastination. Have there been times when it led to unexpected insights or helped you realign with your true priorities?? ??
