Last week, I participated in my first Open Conference, a spectacular event
The topic was The Future of Communication Leadership sponsored and organized by We Lead Comms.
Here are three things I liked about it.
- No prefabricated agenda: While this may seem complex (it wasn't), there was no agenda set beforehand. There was an introduction to the topic by Mike Klein, the event spark, and then the rest of it was proposed by and for the attendees. We voted on the proposed topics and they were divided between two main rounds.
- A unique mix of people: In many industries and professions, you go to a conference and you can pretty much expect to find the same people. When you get a conference brochure, you can often name the speakers before you've even looked at the agenda. Not at this Open Conference. It was a unique mix of commuication professionals from different disciplines, different countries and different industries. I loved this!
- Inspiration: There was so much inspiration and innovative power, it was almost overwhelming. I loved the new ideas that were discussed, the range of topics that were covered, and the excitement you could feel.
If you're in the Asia-Pacific time zones, a Pacific Edition event is planned for the end of October. I would definitely recommend you look into. You won't regret it!

3 年Thanks, Erik! I love your comment - not just because it's positive about the event, but because it challenges a really insidious argument that's getting into the debate about remote vs. office-based working. The office-based brigade is saying "you can't get serendipity outside the office environment." Your take on the Open Conference highlights the fact that serendipity can be generated through other means and platforms - and that the Open Conference (essentially, the online version of Open Space Technology) does this successfully and powerfully. Thanks much for this!
