Seraphim Supplies Local Content PV Modules to The Umoyilanga Project in South Africa
Seraphim New Energy (Pty) Ltd. (“Seraphim”), a leading global solar module manufacturer, has signed an agreement to supply 40.50MW of high-efficiency solar modules to the Avondale Solar Plant in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. The plant, located 35km east of Upington, is part of the Umoyilanga Project awarded under the Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (“RMIPPPP”). The project aims to provide dispatchable energy through a combination of solar, wind and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) technologies, enhancing energy supply reliability and contributing towards the alleviation of the energy crisis in South Africa. EDF Renewables secured the project bid in 2021, and Seraphim has been a crucial solar module technology partner since then, supporting CCM Mooiplaats (Pty) Ltd. (“CCM”), the appointed EPC contractor, with its locally produced products.
David Nú?ez Blundell , Country Manager for South Africa at Seraphim, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership. “The factory in South Africa is an investment made in support of the localization framework defined by the South African authorities for government procurement. Seraphim’s strategic decision to localize manufacturing has paved the way for the exciting collaboration with EDF Renewables and CCM on this landmark project, marking another milestone for Seraphim as we strengthen our presence in the South African market.”
David further added, “We are grateful for the support and visionary policy landscape provided by the South African government through the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition and the IPP Office, which has been instrumental in making this industrial project a success. We anticipate a robust pipeline of future projects in South Africa and look forward to cementing our vision with additional capacity expansion.”
