The 'September Scaries'.
by Chris Cantergiani on September 3rd, 2024
No matter how hard I tried this weekend… I couldn’t come up with a better essay than Elizabeth Angell’s New York Times article, “Do You Have A Case Of The ‘September Scaries’?”
It has only been a few days since I first heard a client use the term, “Sunday Scaries,” in relation to coming back from vacation and dreading the return to work Monday morning.
Angell’s essay actually zeros in on the source of the phrase, and the author spoke with the originator:
“There’s a lot of putting-off that happens in summer,” said Will deFries, whose popular?Sunday Scaries Instagram account?highlights memes about the phenomenon. “There’s a lot of, ‘I’ll worry about that later.’” But by late August, later is very soon, and we can feel the pressures of a busy season bearing down. (Mr. deFries said his account sees an uptick in engagement around Labor Day weekend — a sign that the “scaries” are especially acute this time of year.)
I encourage you to check out Angell’s full essay to learn about getting past the scaries by using a “to-do matrix” (rather than a boring old “to do list”) and by micro-dosing a few September tasks this week.
In honor of Labor Day, you’ll notice the first few headlines below are career and workplace related… something I find clients frequently want to discuss in sessions year round.
As for next month….?
Well, it’s not exactly scary, but in virtually every election year since 1840 there’s always been an “October Surprise.”
As my favorite 80’s alt-rock band, The Replacements, say… I can’t hardly wait.
