September Monthly Roundup
University Hospitals Birmingham Charity
Supporting patients, families and staff across Queen Elizabeth Birmingham, Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull hospitals.
Welcome to the new monthly roundup for Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity, Heartlands Hospital Charity, Good Hope Hospital Charity, and Solihull Hospital Charity. Here we will be sharing with you our recent events, highlighting some of the work we do and thanking some of our incredible supporters.
Supporting our transplant patients on their life-changing journey
Pictured above is Tia. While pregnant with her son in 2021, Tia suffered numerous cardiac arrests and just six months after giving birth to her little boy, she was told she had end-of-life heart failure and placed on the urgent heart transplant list.
Leaving her young baby and family, mum-of-two Tia was admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, where she spent the next five months away from her family. The wait was tough, but thankfully a suitable heart was found.
A few weeks after surgery, Tia went home to her family thanks to the incredible team at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham who helped her through her transplant journey.
About her transplant Tia said, “A special recognition must go to my donor and their family for the selfless act of giving me life. I will always be immensely grateful for this gift and do the most I can with the life I’ve been given.”
The road for a transplant patient can be a long and arduous one with multiple appointments, and tests for weeks and months, sometimes years.
It can be a hard conversation to have, but knowing your loved ones wishes when it comes to organ donation can have a huge impact on future lives.
The multimillion-pound Edmonds Transplant Centre Birmingham is due to open in early 2025 and will greatly improve transplant patients’ treatment journeys by providing them with everything they need pre-op and post-op, all in one place.
The new centre, funded by Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity will become a national centre of excellence for organ transplantation. Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham carries out all the major organ transplants – heart, lung, liver and kidney, headed up by world-leading surgeons and cutting-edge equipment. Edmonds Transplant Centre Birmingham will further cement the city’s reputation as a leader in organ transplants.
We are very grateful to A Edmonds and Co Ltd and the Garfield Weston Foundation for their amazing contributions which will have a huge impact on our transplant patients.

Home Instead
This summer, Home Instead kindly sponsored our Summer Lottery Bumper Draw in July, gifting an incredible £3,000 towards the jackpot prize.
Home Instead is the world’s largest home care provider for the past 27 years, arranging bespoke elderly home care services to support individual family needs, with personalised care plans to suit every case.
Terry Cheung, Managing Director of Home Instead said, “We are honoured to have sponsored Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity this year and we are delighted to support the Birmingham community.” Home Instead aims to transform people’s lives by providing companionship, home help and personal care to both young and older adults, enabling them to stay in their own home for as long as possible.
All of the money we raised from our Summer Lottery Bumper Draw has gone towards supporting patients at QEHB, Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull Hospitals. Thanks to generous donors, like Home Instead, we can continue to fund cutting edge equipment and facilities, ground-breaking research and added extras to help patients and staff at our hospitals.

The Renato Lounge
We’d like to say a big thank you to The Renato Lounge in Mere Green, who have been fundraising for the Children’s Emergency Department at Good Hope Hospital this summer.
During the month of June, The Lounges Café Bar chain host fundraising events as part of what they call ‘Lounge Aid’. Each bar chooses a local charity or cause that means something to them and we are extremely grateful that The Renato Lounge chose to support Good Hope Hospital Charity.
Staff organised a variety of fundraising activities including quizzes, live music nights, a teddy bears picnic and pop-up stalls. Members of the team also climbed Snowdon and took part in the Royal Sutton Fun Run. They have raised an amazing £2,841 and were able to match fund part of their fundraising. We’re incredibly grateful for their efforts, and thanks to amazing corporate supporters like The Renato Lounge, we can continue going over and above for patients and staff across our hospitals.
We are always delighted to hear from local business and community groups that want to support us or one of our appeals. If this is you, please get in touch via email: [email protected] or call 0121 371 4852.
