September Acorn Recap
It was another great month for The Acorn. We grew substantially and we planned our first Meetup!
Here are 5 of the things we discussed last month:
How Housing Intensifies the Racial Wealth Gap
- “The headline finding is that the average respondent thinks that black wealth is about 80 percent that of whites; whereas Census data suggest that black wealth is about 5 percent that of whites.”
Maybe Cities Are the Future of Suburbs
- Bottom Line: We might be looking at the whole thing wrong…
- “The whole notion of “city” versus “suburb” is based on the way the world looked during the first part of the 20th century. Jobs were clustered in dense urban cores. People would live in the residential rings surrounding the city, and commute in to work. The suburbs were “sub“ because they depended economically on the city.”
Amazon to build second HQ in North America, seeks proposals from cities for $5B campus with up to 50K jobs, ‘full equal’ to Seattle operations
- Bottom Line: Amazon is on the hunt. A lot of SF figures are being thrown around for long term needs, but it is worth noting that — according to Costar -the Downtown Raleigh submarket has a total office stock of 7.8MSF. Amazon is a HUGE user.
- “Amazon didn’t provide a specific reason for deciding to establish a second headquarters, but the initiative suggests the company has outgrown Seattle. It’s an unprecedented move for a corporation of Amazon’s size to split its HQ operations, allowing managers, engineers and executives to choose where they live. That speaks to Amazon’s insatiable appetite for talent, and its need to establish a second outpost as a competitive advantage to continue growing its base of talent.”
Downtown apartment complex destroyed by fire now has a timeline for rebuilding
- Bottom Line: With demolition well under way, the Metropolitan project has a path to move forward.
- “The concrete deck and a pair of towering stairwells were all that remained standing after the Metropolitan burned to the ground on March 16, in Raleigh’s worst fire since the 1920s. . Although the deck showed no visible signs of damage, it will be replaced to ensure structural integrity, the company said.”
Carvana opens vending machine in Raleigh
- Bottom Line: Would you buy a car from a vending machine? Cause now you can!
- “We’re making car buying fun again by giving customers an easy, quick alternative to the traditional dealership,” Garcia said.
