September 2024 Round-up
Welcome to the September newsletter from the Chartered Institute of Fundraising. It’s been a busy month and I’m grateful to be able to share lots of news and updates with the fundraising community.
Giving Tuesday – get involved
Giving Tuesday is now less than 10 weeks away, and this year the global day of giving takes place on Tuesday 3 December. Charities in the UK are invited to join us with the theme of Give Your Way, which highlights the numerous ways people can support charities – through different fundraising methods and other ways of giving too. The Chartered Institute is leading the UK campaign, and you can find resources, insight and tools to get your charity involved and maximise your fundraising income on the Giving Tuesday website.
Members of the Chartered Institute can also attend a special webinar on the topic of Giving Tuesday. The webinar is on Thursday 31 October, 12.30-1.15pm, and will feature:
Members can register to join live or watch on-demand via the member hub. If you are interested in becoming a member and gain access to this webinar and much more, speak to one of the membership team or visit our website.
News from the Chartered Institute
At the start of September, the Chartered Institute published report findings from the Independent Review. You can read the report and find out how we are keeping fundraisers safe on our Safeguarding Hub.
Last week I was really pleased that the Chartered Institute welcomed our new Board of Trustees, including Harpreet Kondel as Chair of the Board. You can read about her fundraising career and how she got started at an early age and is now shaping the fundraising sector.
Also, this month I attended the Directory of Social Change conference and was delighted to join 70+ other female charity leaders to discuss feminist leadership, allyship and equity in the workplace, along with values-based leadership and much more. It was great to hear Chartered Institute trustee and CEO of the British Deaf Association, Rebecca Mansell speak about her experiences as a leader. ?
I’m also excited to announce that we launched Rising Stars for Fundraising Convention 2025 this week. This is a great opportunity to showcase the talent of those who joined the fundraising sector in the last two years and who will go on to play a big part in progressing our sector. For the successful applicants, we’ll pair you with a mentor who will help you shape your ideas and develop it into a five minute presentation to deliver at Convention. The deadline to apply is Monday 18 November, so get your applications in.
Also, a reminder that we are currently looking for Convention Call for Papers. The deadline for applications is Monday 21 October, so don’t miss out on the chance to speak to your fellow fundraisers and share your knowledge – send us your ideas in now.
And hot off the press, we are very pleased to share that yesterday Ceri Edwards , Executive Director of Change at the Chartered Institute, was appointed the new President of the European Fundraising Association (EFA) . Of the plans that the new Board at the EFA have, Ceri said: “We will start by listening to our members to explore how we can all work together to make the most of what has always been a creative and ambitious network of national fundraising associations."
Forthcoming events, webinars and training
Looking ahead, there’s lots of events coming up both in-person and online for fundraisers to get involved with.
Next week, on Tuesday 2 October, Chartered Institute members can find out all about how to get your fundraising lottery off the ground with our expert webinar in partnership with Gatherwell. Big impact. Small budget. Fundraising lotteries on a shoestring will help you launch a successful weekly lottery with minimal resources – perfect for small charities, those looking to test out lotteries, and those with small budgets.
On Wednesday 3 October, we’re hosting a face-to-face fundraising roundtable in London. This is for senior fundraisers and compliance managers who want to discuss updates to the Code of Fundraising Practice with their peers and legal expertise from Bates Wells.
On Tuesday 19 November, the Legacy and In-Memory Fundraising Conference will be taking place in London and it’s a fantastic opportunity for all fundraisers working in this area to get together, hear expert insights, get practical advice and connect with your peers. The conference is open to everyone, whether you are new to legacy and in-memory fundraising or are a seasoned professional.
We all know that the fundraising landscape is always evolving and there are certain topics which you need to understand to ensure your fundraising is safe, ethical and has space for creativity.?That’s why we have created two new?on-demand short courses designed specifically for our organisational members. Find out about our AI course, and our Ethics course and get your teams up-to-speed.
There’s plenty to get stuck in to if you’re a member of the Chartered Institute, plus the Giving Tuesday campaign which is open to charities across the UK.
Take care,
Katie.
