The September 2024 Payroll and Reward Brunch

In August, I devoted the whole of the Brunch to the topic of payrolling expense and benefits, set to be mandated from April 2026.? This is pending the new UK Government’s confirmation and that’s important to note.

Governments are back to work after the summer recess (though it’s Conference Recess now, returning in early October!).? However, in the short time they were back at work, we have had one new Act of Parliament already, important ahead of the October 2024 UK Budget.?

This UK Budget promises nothing but pain, doom and gloom if speculation is anything to go by.? It’s almost certain there will be changes, some of which may not be to everyone’s liking.

So, ahead of the UK Budget, let’s get up-to-date in terms of things that are and are not happening in the payroll and reward environment.? After all, it’s important to know what is happening but just as important to know what is not.?

And there’s plenty going on.?

As well as updating you on the latest news, I want to look at the UK Government’s Employment Rights Bill that will apply to workers and employers in Great Britain.? This will make significant employment law changes and what happens there knocks-on to payroll processing.? So, the ‘concern’ is the impact of the devolution of employment law to Northern Ireland.??

Are UK employers, software developers and payroll and reward professionals really going to have to administer things differently, for example Statutory Sick Pay?

Payroll is not a standalone function and much of what we do stems from developments in other areas.? That’s why it’s the Payroll and Reward Brunch rather than payroll alone.?

Plus, if we are to call ourselves UK professionals, we must look at developments in all areas of the UK, not just information that comes from London.? Westminster is vitally important; however, it is not the sole legislative and administrative UK hub.

So much to talk about, but keeping update is essential if payroll and reward professionals are to meet our ‘simple’ task of paying on time and accurately.??
