Ginny’s Update
Fall is in full swing now, and we started it off with a cruise to New England and Canada and a visit with my in-laws in NJ.? I’m reminded of how healthy it is to get away from our regular schedules and habits and mingle with the rest of the world for a while.? If you haven’t had a significant vacation/break from your everyday world, I hope you’ll remedy that by year-end.? Even a staycation can be very rewarding!
?
Retirement Planning
Along the way to retirement, not only do many of us change jobs and employers, but we may also go through a divorce.? PLEASE make sure that you have changed your beneficiaries to remove your ex from any old 401(k)s/IRAs!
While working with clients to consolidate their older accounts into a combined new account, I often hear things like, “I’ve been meaning to look into these accounts but just haven’t taken the time to find the phone number, find my password to login, etc.”? If you are divorced and aren’t sure that you removed your ex as a beneficiary, TODAY might be a good day to check that out.? Women, I’m especially imploring you to do this.

Household Finance Tips
Have you given any thought yet to the 2024 Holidays that are three months away?? Do you have money set aside for gift giving, throwing parties, special events, decorations, mailing out cards, etc.?? If not, now might be a good time to put together a simple budget of how much you would like to spend and what you need to set aside in Sep/Oct/Nov to pay for everything.? Or, if you’ve had a significant setback in your finances this year, now might be the time to admit to yourself and your family that this year will need to be different due to the circumstances. ?Doesn’t mean you still can’t have fun and enjoy the festivities; you might just need to be a little more creative in how that looks this year. ?

?Book Review
This month I’m recommending a book about Life vs Finances.? I’ve just discovered this author (Kate Bowler) who is clever, funny, and irreverent even though she’s a professor at the Duke Divinity school.? No Cure for Being Human (and Other Truths I Need to Hear) is a book I got from the library and read every day during our cruise – I read through it twice and cannot wait to read her other books.? From the book jacket: “Kate….tries to come to terms with her limitations in a culture that says anything is possible.? Life is beautiful and terrible, full of hope and despair and everything in between – and there’s no cure for being human.”
